Im looking for any body currently working in the oil and gas industry.
Currently studying a MSc in Oil and Gas and was just looking for opinions as I’ve been offered a completely different career path in construction.

Just wondering how much you travel? Do you enjoy your job? Small details like that would be fantastic.

A little research suggest that hydrocarbon industry is solid with many jobs whereas construction is slowing (10% decline last year).

    Thanks all!

“Just wondering how much you travel? Do you enjoy your job”

Currently an operations engineer in a large service company for a specific product line on a global level as oppose to regional

what i do mostly is fly in to cover region projects if its a first time running our equipment , make up strength in crews in other regions , analyse data on **** ups and write/review proceedures for jobs as well as provide technical assistance and on call duty for when things go wrong(its the oil industry) – bit of a jack of all trades

I travel a fair bit but generally do longer trips rather than a few days here and there. done about 12 weeks abroad this year. – 6 in nigeria , 2 in houston , 4 in ukraine

I enjoy the travel at the moment because of the nature of my picking up the pieces i generally fly to different places rather than doing the same trips time and time again.

how ever – be careful there are some really shit jobs out there in O & G – i got lucky. friend of mine was a geo logger – she got paid less than the cleaners on the rig !

jambo – seriously – as long as the course requires some technical input from him it wont stand him any harm in almost any technical career.

Thanks Trail_rat ! Exact response im after. I presume you have degree of some sort? I like the idea of doing something similar to what you do. Sounds like you get plenty of variation and project work.

Jambo- why? I took the MSc because it suits my interests and career aspirations. The construction job is just something ive been offered on the side.

b eng(hons) in mechanical engineering from dundee so robotics and medical related

yep its the variation that keeps me happy in my job , ive turned down more money to go into a more specific areas of my job as a specialist for region but the fact i can travel about and have control to an extent of where/when i go suits me as oppose to working for someone who only cares about getting the work done in the region at a low cost……..

when ive been coming to the office for 6 months im a different man – im get pretty down about coming to the same place every day.

I was fortunate enough to have been working on the side in construction and latterly in landscaping(both at the coalface as oppose project management) throughout secondary school and uni with the family business’s and decided that it wasnt for me – i wanted to see the world.

Can I offer an opinion from the construction side? What role is it you have been offered?

Seems odd to be asking important and fundamental questions about O&G jobs when your a long way down the path of getting into the industry…

Jambo- the course is 1 year long. I’ve been advised to start job hunting in January. I would therfore like to have a plan prior to this date (its only 3 months away). Hardly a long way.

Trail rat- thanks again for all the info! May need to conact you in the future.

Wallop- Ive also got a MSc in Building Surveying so it would down the charted building surveying route. thanks.

Ah OK – more property management than construction. I can’t really help as I’ve always been on the main contractor side of things but I think building surveying is a solid industry – and will probably be more so as existing assets need to be retained for longer. The insurance side of things will become a bigger sector of that industry too.

It’s not as glamourous as O&G though, eh?

Travel in the O+G industry is an interesting one.. To an extent you just have to make sure your job matches your expectations. I started off working for a major service company as “International mobile” as I wanted to travel… but actually it wasn’t for me.
I then worked for an oil company where I spent 6 years in London and didn’t travel hardly at all. I’m now working overseas for some-one else but again I don’t really leave the office. I prefer this but other people prefer to move around more.

I would say that a lot of careers in O + G have an expectation that to really progress you’re going to be moving around the world a fair bit so for travel I tend to think more long term expat positions than business trips.

I’m also curious about this idea around O+G management… I’m technical (geologist) so most of my managers started working in technical roles and then moved into management. The O+G industry is solid when the price of oil is high but if it drops then the culling starts fast… enjoy the good times but don’t expect them to be the norm.
