  • Any cryptic crossword regulars?

After getting increasingly annoyed clicking around here and BBC News getting more and more bored at work, I happily remembered that Guardian crosswords are online.

    Anyone else do them regularly?

If you’re stuck, 7 up is “Lemonade”.

I was feeling pretty clever as I typed in the first four answers immediately.. then I got stuck 🙁

Not done any for ages. Used to have a joint effort over a pint on a friday lunchtime at my old place (telegraph and indy probably).

Some are incredibly easy, others are just obscure.

So obscure they could even be called.. cryptic?

Give us one of the toughies, molgrips. I’m bored.

    1 Across. ‘Busy Postman’

    How many letters?

    Absolutely loads.

Yea, but not TG. Tried another version most days when I used to commute. Than a break for about a year and just got back into them.

Like the two jokes above, haven’t heard either!

    Come on Molly,

    Give us a clue!

They’re probably not tough, I’m just not that good – but I could do with this one answered:

4 Smooth over hurtful published piece (5,7)

Starts with P. I thought of ‘print article’ for published piece but it bears no relation to the rest of the clue.

    press release?

    Press cutting

If its any help, the definition looks to be at the end. Think first of a word for smooth over, then a trickier one for hurtful. This should give you the answer. I think it does begin with a P

Sorry x post with nick. I agree press cutting would be my suggestion.

3d needs to posted on tritalk!

    I like 11D and 6D as well!

    Press cutting, aye.

11D is easy, 3d was one of the ones I got instantly, not got 6 yet.

    6 is Adopt.

    Fuss = “A do”
    Gymnastics = “PT”

5d in today’s Graun looks like Parthenon but I can’t figure out why..

That’s was tricky, possible country and western singer around group of women on a special night out gives you your solution, I reckon! Certainly fits.

Dolly always sends me off on a cloning sheep red herring.

Edit, forget group of women, just the Scottish term for her.

Parton.. d’oh! I saw Parton and hen but didn’t make the connection with Dolly… I’m not sure I’m cut out for this game.

I only saw it because I missed a similar Dolly clue in another paper quite recently! Hence it jumped out this time, especially as you had the answer.

I get very rusty without practice. Since stopping commuting, I have lost the knack! But since your OP I have tried to get back into the DT version with varying degrees of success. Long time since completing sadly!

I got fed up of sitting on here pressing F5, then I remembered about the online Graun.

Ok, mol I need you help now from today’s DT cryptic

Sort of dog in demand I don’t fancy (6,7)

I am guessing that the answe is a sort of dog. And that it is an anagram of in demand I don’t. It must be obvious but I can’t see it and it’s holding me up!!!

Thank you C’pt. I have never heard of that breed so would never have got it. Three to go for first complete in a while (albeit it with help). Thanks.

Never heard of it. Tinned Diamond?*

*CF’s answer is better, what with it being right and all.

THM, today’s was, I hate to say, quite easy!

(On gardening leave at the mo, so have plenty of time over the papers! )

It was easier but still have to get 4d, 14d and 15d. Appropriately the last one is something to do with headache.

The “close” mademe smile today. Simple but nice clue IMO.

CFH I hope that is with something firm at the end! No, that’s not cryptic!! (Asia?)

    15d, think PFJ and JPF

    😉

And yes, all lined up! UK based, but lots of APAC.

    Month off for me, though!
