Seriously though, don’t know what line of work you’re in, but assuming you’re looking for decent work ASAP, get a bang up to date CV up on Monster, fish4jobs, total jobs and all the other job websites, and then ring a load of recruitment agencies and get appointments with them… A good recruitment agent is definitely worth their weight in gold, though many are useless.

I would also highly recommend getting a part time play-job to keep you busy while you’re hunting. Bike shops are good, lots of nice discounts on stuff! 😉

sorry to hear that. keep the chin up and all that sort of thing.

You’ll be fine. As said: get out on your bike for an hour or more a day. Don’t get cabin fever sat in all day trawling for jobs. It can get on top of you very quickly.

And remember: jobs are like buses….. 🙂

+1 for get out and ride. Just got employment after a 7 month ‘enforced holiday’.

Get down the job center, sign on and then set yourself targets and a routine. Try and remember not to pester any ‘nibbles’ you get, but be persistent!

Don’t rely on agents, they have their own agenda, and build upon your existing network of contacts in your field. Maybe its time to broaden your field of career interests too. Build variants of your CV to suit, so they are ready and waiting to post at a moments notice. I found it useful to build a spreadsheet and update it every evening (you can use this for evidence of job searching for the Job Center too)

Most companies these days don’t use generic agents, so go direct, and remember you are the only person fighting your corner!

OH, and it’s a waste of time ‘aiming low’ as employers spot that a mile off, and its not a sure thing. Nothing is, until you have a signed contract.

I’ve just returned from an 18 month placement with the VSO in Ethiopia where I installed a network in a teacher training college.

I’m a network administrator. But can turn my hand to a lot of IT stuff.

I’ve also moved to Glasgow to be with Joanne, my fiance. I know there is work in Surrey where I’m from, but at the moment, I want to try to find something up here.

So I’m dealing with unemployment and settling back into the developed world and moving to Glasgow all at the same time.

And you’ll be seeing me riding every day…

I just googled Network Admistrator Glasgow and got a few jobs. Seem to be several with BNP Paribas.

In Scotland I think you may qualify for £200 of training vouchers. I used mine for TEFL qualification lessons.

Also, I became a volunteer director of a not-for-proft organisation. Maybe with your IT skills, you could offer one or two days every so often, so that your CV does not have any big gaps?

I am sure in IT you should be OK finding work in the next month or so.

Jools- I never even thought about just googling. Daft really. Lots of stuff to look at.

Simon- I like the volunteering idea. I’ve found a couple of opportunities for helping out already.

Its hard moving to a new place and looking for work- it made me realise I’ve never really had to look for work. Jobs have always come my way from my personal network, and I don’t have one anymore!
