When I turn my Kindle off it has some sort of picture on the front, it doesn't ever appear to go to a completely blank screen, is this right? also whilst on holiday recently we went away trekking for 3 days, battery was 3/4 full at least, get back and battery was completely flat. I was under the impresion people had posted on here before that they read theirs regularly and battery lasts weeks if not months without charging? It's within warranty so was just wondering if I should be sending it back to Amazon.

Yeah, it'll be the wireless.

Nope defiantely not wireless not used it in ages.

Do you have a proper Kindle cover for it? Read somewhere they drain batteries (assumes a light is on or something) and once I removed it the battery started to last properly. Got a skin thingy from Poundland to protect it.
Wireless is the other thing to reduce battery life, but you have said yours is off.

keeping the screen like that uses no power - e-ink screens only use power whilst changing what they display.
Could it be someone else used the device? if you want you can turn it off compeltely by holding the power switch for ~5 seconds, but it won't make any difference.
Even if you don't use the wireless, there's a chance the device is hooking itself online to check for updates? I don't know if a kindle does this - but I've left mine on half battery for months before and its still on half battery when i get back

Blackhound I have a Timbuk 2 cover/sleeve for it so strange! Maybe I'll contact Amazon and see what they say about lack of holding power. Thanks.

I have an analogue multi layer organic non power dependent kindle style reader. In fairness, it doesnt have 3g, but it was only £1 in Oxfam.

The picture is a screen saver, if you push the power button across and hold it the kindle will close down properly
