i went over on my ankle about 6 years ago, the injury seemed to heal by itself. in the last couple of years ive suffered with ankle pain thats just getting worst. ive been to the doctors countless times and about a year ago he said ive got gout? i didnt even know what that was! so i changed my diet and stopped eating foods that cause uric acid build up to try and prevent the cristal build up in my joints, i also take cider apple vinegar thats supposed to help. im now at the point where i think the docs got it wrong and my ankle joint is just worn out and i may need some surgery to sort this out. riding the bike is the one thing that makes my ankle feel better, so has anyone had an op on there ankle and did it work out, or do you wish you had just not bothered? opinions please?

Currently 6 weeks in from having my ankle fused, likely to be in an air boot for another 6 to go and the indication is I’ll then have 6 months recovery on top. Hopefully will fix things but it can’t be any worse than it was.

WCA and Ton have had similar done from memory.

davo, get to a proper doctor and tell him you want sending for a xray.

i went over on my ankle 30 years ago playing rugby. couldnt walk for a few days, but never went for a xray.
struggled on with a painful sore ankle for 30 years, to the point where i couldnt walk at all, but i could ride the bike.
went for a xray, ankle was rotten with arthritis, but worse, my talus bone was split in 2 when i 1st injured it, and it had healed with a 5mm gap in it.
so, yours might be nothing, like i thought mine was. get it xrayed.

mrhoppy, hope you are healing well mate. 14 month in from fusion and my foot still dont feel like it belongs to me, but i am pain free.

June 2015 , my son had a bad off on his bike in Hamsterley. Dislocated ankle and open fracture to his tibia. After reconstructive surgery and three month’s on his back he began his recovery. Even though he has little cartilage left in his ankle, he’s back on his bike and recovered remarkably well. He was lucky that he had a fantastic military surgeon who operated on his ankle (James Cook hospital is also a military hospital). Ask for a specialist doctor to examine your ankle and hopefully it will get sorted

It helped that my son was airlifted straight to James Cook and the surgeon came in at 1am to operate but stand your ground and demand a specialist opinion

Me too, I broke mine when I was a kid, obvious ‘greenstick’ fracture according to the doctor. Which has healed perfectly, apart from the piece of bone floating about that locks the joint in a horrible position that I have to manually put back into place if I go over on it. Except that can’t happen, as it would be incredibly painful (I pointed out that at that point I was lying on the floor in a heap screaming), oh and the degeneration in the joint that the radiologist noticed when I went over on it hard earlier this month that was worrying enough for A&E to refer me to fracture clinic, who then referred me back to the GP, who implied that I was wasting everyone’s time when I asked for an elective referral to the ankle specialist…

    It’s pretty annoying.

Cheers Ton, at the moment I’m almost completely pain free, getting very bored of restricted mobility. I’m trying to work out the range of mobility I’ve got now while not cocking things up.

I’m being roundly mocked for using the borrowed mobility scooter for getting about. 😳 😳 😳

    mrhoppy, take it slowly mate.
i spoke to WCA prior to have my fusion. he told me it took 12 month to get back to any normality. i thought he was joking, but he was correct.
good new is, i had mine done in august, but i was back on the bike in november. 8)

I’m behaving mostly, sick of the crutches getting in the way and the rigmarole of fitting the airboot but looking at the end game. I specifically picked when I did so the weather is bad so I don’t get too tempted and I should be most of the way better by next summer. Then I get to do the same on the other side. 🙄

Old, you cheeky bugger, I’m mid 30s. 😕

Will try and fit a couple of big trips in through the summer. Hopefully should see me right for a few years then though.

Good luck with joining the hip op generation, a few rellies of mine have had it done, recovered fairly quickly and have much improved mobility.
