  • Angular contact bearings – what are they? and a brake pad query!

My Wheels Manufacturing PF30 BB is dying a death and I’m pretty sure it is the bearings rather than anything more technical. According to the box, it is the Angular Bearing model of the BB – I can’t find any shop open that is aware of these BBs (I haven’t tried many!) but, what makes angular bearings angular?

According to the info on Madison UK’s website, the BB system uses –

6806 30 mm ID bearings are installed to machined Delrin cups adaptable for both 68 mm and 73 mm shell widths

Now that looks/sounds pretty standard to me, so would standard bearings fit? Is the angular bit the bit inside the actual bearing itself? Therefore any bearing that meets that size (6806 with an internal diameter of 30mm) would fit?

Looking on the Enduro website, they have an exploded diagram of their angular contact bearings and the outer surface of the bearing appears to be flat.

Needing some pointers so I can order up the replacement bits and get the BB back on the silk smooth road!

Also, has anyone who runs Hope Mono M4 brakes used Superstar component pads? I’m using the organic pads – stop me fine but they appear to be a fraction shorter than other pads as they rattle when the bike is moving…just thought I’d ask that as well in case it is just me.

Yes. But with PF30 do you not buy a whole new BB though?

You used to replace the whole unit, but they now offer serviceable units…I need to replace the bearings on this one.
Thanks for link…off to find some.

Hmm, still unclear if I need to replace with more angular bearings or not…will call Madison UK tomorrow.

Something like these would do the job I am sure. Be better quality than most BBs come with.

I am guessing the angular contact ones are tapered roller bearings rather than the more common ball bearings but they are not showing in that size

Scrap that. Seems they are ball-bearings. Quote from SKF “Angular contact ball bearings have raceways in the inner and outer rings that are displaced with respect to each other in the direction of the bearing axis.”

A bit spendy but would certainly do the job….

Also found this description. Not your size but might help explain what you are up against!

Thanks…called Madison UK and they confirmed the bb30 bearing kit is fine…so normal bearings are fine, ta.

Angular contact bearings are designed to take radial and thrust loads in combination. The proper reference is 61806 which denotes the bearing size and it is a radial ball bearing which will be available from any bearing distributor, add 2rs for the rubber sealed version. SKF are probably the best bearings out there and IMO worth the premium. For the record I work for Brammer, who are bearing distributors for most of the recognised bearing manufacturer’s in Europe.
Check the bearing size on the SKF website
