I’m not really one for labels in music, but I’ve been listening to quite a lot of this recently and want more similar stuff. A few ideas of what I like:

Haxan Cloak
Andy Stott
Loscil
Global Communication
Biosphere
Carbon Based Lifeforms
Karen Gwyer

I really like the stuff that is heavy on atmospherics, admittedly some of the above aren’t exactly ambient as such, but seem like a reasonable starting point. What else should I be checking out?

Big ambient/ambient techno fan for decades, originally via Orb, FSOL etc – although have in recent years gotten into more minimal stuff, notably Wolfgang Voigt’s ‘Gas’ (check out his stuff circa Königsforst, Zauberberg and Pop – sublime, don’t use the word ‘perfect’ often when describing music but for me have been enjoying these three lps near constantly for a decade now, never tire of it)

also:

The Field
Tim Hecker
Yasume
Fennesz
Brian Eno
And a must-mention – James Plotkin. IMO an under-recognised genius. Look out for his work on ‘A Strange Perplexing’ and O.L.D’s ‘Formula’.

Kompakt label is an interesting launchpad…

Boards of Canada? Lovely mix this: https://soundcloud.com/skywavesystems/a-boards-of-canada-mix

Tycho, big fan of Awake.

Based on the fact you wrote Carbon based Lifeforms, I recently discovered them and really like Interloper. Will be looking into the other artists you mentioned, find this is the music I can put on at work and just get stuff done.

A few from the vaults: Plotkin/Spybey, Eno’s ‘Thursday Afternoon’ LP, and Wolfgang Voigt (Gas) ‘Pop’ #7 – < this last one unexpectedly ‘opened my kernel’, mind-altering – yet I can work or study for hours listening to it on repeat. Weird.

Great, keep them coming! Lots to be getting on with here.

Massive BoC fan. I’ve got a couple of Tim Hecker albums, but never quite clicked with them. Same for 0pN, I love Games though!

Been listening to Autechre since Chastic Slide, good stuff.

CBL are just really easy to listen to, as you say. Even the missus likes them. Interloper is probably my favourite, World of Sleepers is similar in feel.

TBH I have no idea what I’m listening most of the time, but my Internet Radio has Soma FM Groove Salad at the top of the favourites list. It just does ambient so giving it a listen just give yu some ideas. Think the website does playlists as well

Listening to that ^^^ Gas track at my desk. Reminiscent of Klaus Schulze’s I Loop you Schwindelig – repetitive with seemingly nothing much going on, but great nonetheless.

^ Yes, seemingly is the word! It’s deceptively enormous, especially piped through some decent cans – once you begin hearing subliminal counter-rhythms/melodies that somehow appear and throb through the shimmer – and sometimes are heard differently on each listen, like an aural version of an optical illusion where the shape is either concave or convex, or moving both left and right, depending on perception.

Have heard some Klaus Schulze but not that one will check it out. What I’ve heard of his stuff in the past seemed a bit unimaginative/crystal-gift-shop-mood-CD-ish for my ears, but maybe time for another listen!

🙂

I’ll admit, Scwindelig is the only one of his I really listen to, but it’s 30 mins long! Don’t much care for the rest of his Klangart album.

Love this thread. Global Communication! Forgot about them, loved that stuff now on a retro-hunt as haven’t listened since cassette tapes were rattling in a bumbag…

Which reminds me – feel I’ve missed out paying respects to Orb and old stablemates FFWD (Thomas Fehlmann & Robert Fripp). I’ve loved Orb’s music on and off since first hearing ‘Live 93’ (which is essential IMO, along with Orbvs Terrarvm.) tbh often found their stuff patchy for my tastes – but I find much joy cherry-picking tracks to create sublime playlists. When they are good they can be so good it makes me wonder wtf are they channeling and from where?

Anyway, a small Orb/FFWD playlist by way of homage:

FFWD ‘Lucky Saddle’ (FFWD):

Orb – ‘Plateau’ from Orbvs Terrarvm. This ambient piece (along with sister-track ‘Valley’ from same album) really is utter bliss. Bought the album on the strength of both. Have probably ridden more happy miles over last few decades with this on the cans than with any other piece of music. Sounds maybe an odd thing to say – yet I feel grateful for having gained such immense pleasure over the years from such a small personal outlay:

Slight aside from ambient per se but when Orb do what they also do well (a sort of subterranean ambient dub) it’s singularly good stuff:

Orb ‘High Noon’:

Same goes with ‘Ghostdancing’, captivating vocals too:

Lastly – just found this ‘top ten ambient tunes according to Orb’ (I note a mention for ‘Gas’ so feel vindicated!):

A lot of his stuff is free. Some glorious soundscapes, he describes his music thusly:
“My name is Andy. I’m interested in playing the guitar as slow as possible. This is my music.”
