    Hi chaps

Have been thinking about putting an Alfine hub in an old MTB frame – vertical drops, no EBB. The only solution would be to use a chain tensioner – can anyone forsee problems taking this offroad?

    Cheers

    Should be fine.

Don’t Shimano even make a Alfine specific chain tensioner?

Lots of people are doing this already with no problems.
Quite a few threads about it on here and also over on mtbr.com

If you don’t want to run a chain tensioner take a look at these:

I have run mine with the alfine chain tensioner and two front rings for 2500 miles and no issues.

Yeah, they are not cheap. Although remember it does include the bottom bracket. If a Shimano HT2 BB costs you £40 and a chain tensioner costs £20 then you are already over half way to the cost of it.

Have a look at the Yess tensioners

My Alfine has been hammered all over Glentress / Inners (including Matador) and the Lakes. Never missed a beat.
