The Puffer saw me retiring my trusty North Face Starburst after many years of adventures so after on the market for a suitable replacement.

Requirements are small 2 man, don’t need room for kit as long as there is a good enough size porch

Not after ultra light weight as most camping nowadays is not too far from the car and if it is going to be carried for exped it would be split between two

Need to pitch dry (outer up before inner for putting up in the rain) Would prefer it to pitch as one though as I hate the tents where you clip an inner up onto an erected outer, fiddly and slow.

Tall enough to sit up in, no need to be any bigger

Zipped openings to be side hinged so they dont lay out on the ground

Usual expectations to handle plenty of rain and wind, it will be used all year round

Budget around £200 but would spend more where justified

Open then to stw hive mind, what do you think?

Within budget, check the sizing, Elixir 3 not that much more… I like MSR.

We used a Vango Halo 200 for a good few years, and very happily. Very stable, self-supporting rigid 3-pole dome. Alloy poles, bathtub groundsheet and waterproof in alll weathers IME. Pitches taught, nearly silent in a breeze or stronger. I like this. It really feels very secure and ultra-cosy when all zipped down for bed, yet opens out up really nicely in fine weather so you can get a thru-breeze and stacks of space.

You get a large exit each side so don’t have to disturb each other if need a fast exit (or entrance!) in the night. Plenty of adjustable venting via a combination of mosquito netting, double zips, mesh vents and two handy outer-vestibules ( big enough for boots and medium rucksack each).

You can leave the inner attached so pitches all in one. Flysheet finally died from UV damage after many (long) seasons but will buy again, or something just as stable with v similar layout. Am really partial to that Vango orange inner tho…YMMV 😉

The reviews of the msr say it pitches inner first. Has anyone any experience of this, can you porch in one or outer first?

Oddly, the Halo 300 is currently cheaper than the 200. Am tempted now to go even bigger 8)
