After a tablet PC or similar for daughter’s birthday (she will be 9). For use at home for e-mail, web, games. She also has a desire to download Google maps – presume this is quite heavy on memory use? (can you tell I know lots? 😀 ).

    Wife has found this http://theandroidshop.tv/products/1/18/8_inch_android_tablet_22_with_wifi_and_camera/.

    Any thoughts?

Edit: following further discussion she wants to do Word & PowerPoint docs!

Just selling a Toshiba netbook NB200. To be honest I find them very slow.

Do you not get word and pp online for free with hotmail account?

She enjoys making PPs and seems to have a natural aptitude for technology. She has a really enquiring mind – we don’t see it as a toy really. She seems good at it and therefore we want to encourage it.

Your original link won’t work for me but tablets don’t do office.
Netbooks do but you need to spend some cash to get the grunt you need.

You can go down the office route (which will be expensive), or you can get a netbook with ubuntu on and use open office which is free.

I’ve found the Acer Aspire netbooks to be excellent value for money but you still need to spend a little more to get enough power to run windows/office.

Cheers for that. Link won’t work for me now either!

I’ll investigate Netbook and Ubuntu I think.

I’m trying to think back to what I had at that age. Can you still get ZX Spectrums?

I would get a laptop instead, something like a lenovo g560 will do everything you want, ans won’t be as limited as a netbook or tablet. Maybe more than you want to spend but if your daughter has an aptitude for technology it could be a wise investment?
