Got uplift days coming up soon at Antur Stiniog and Bike Park Wales and thinking of finally getting some knee & elbow protection. Anyone have any recommendations?

Would prefer not to have the basic hard outer shell ones and as they’ll get used in summer mustn’t get too toasty either.

Never even used any before so would really appreciate some advice. Many thanks.

Depends on much really, but how much you want to spend, where you balance protection vs all day use and whether the things actually fit your bodyshape are the biggys. Pads that are a bit sloppy fitting won’t stay put on impact when you need them.

You’re really going to have to visit a lot of actual shops trying things on/borrow from friends/risk many weeks of returning things to the internet.

I’ve just gone from 661 Rages (like Kyle Straits) to POC vpd 2.0’s and the difference in comfort and fit is astronomical. That said, the 661 knees have been tested many times over the last couple of years and have certainly not been a waste of money. Nukeproofs often work for people but can be a tad sweaty for big days.

What I would say is make sure the elbows feel natural. If it feels like you have hardback books taped to your elbows you’ll never be wearing them when it would help. 😉

These are great, and can be put on and off without removing shoes

For the elbows the matching elbow pads are super comfy but order a size larger once on forget about them

Troy Lee EG 5550 Elbow pads are ace. I’m recovering from a broken elbow (remember to put pads on, don’t get cocky on local trails!) and they are ace, just stick them on (bit of snug effort to get them on) and then almost forget they are there. Not too bulky either, they fit under a load of my jerseys and tops.

I got some Leatt Hardshell Pads, they are bulky, but I’m only going to use them for uplifts.

I find with knee pads you really need to try them on and try pedalling in them.

I saw the knee version of those TLD’s being heavily recommended a while ago and bought a set from CRC after carefully measuring following the guide. Couldn’t even pull them on without feeling like stitching was going to break in a non-returnable way, so returned them and stuck with the velcro strap 661’s I had for a bit longer. I think pads are the same as helmets and you need to try them before buying.

I ordered 6 pairs from CRC and kept the ones I liked the most – easy-peasy

Don’t rule out hard plastic shells, my POC bones are fine for trail use in the summer.
