  • Advice, broken Styloid Radius (wrist) how long before riding?

On Friday I broke my wrist whilst riding at Gisburn Forrest (Stupid lack of balance)

Anyhow A&E yesterday said it was broken and I’m now in a cast. I’m going to fracture clinic on Wednesday when they will decide whether to operate and screw it back on or just leave to heal itself.

Has anyone had this injury before, how long realisticay did it take before you were back on the bike? I’m supposed to be doing mountain mayhem in 8 weeks. The Doctors have said it will be in pot for 6 weeks but could be up to 3 months before properly healed 🙁

How long has it taken other people to get over this injury and riding again?

    Just getting over mine,

If they say 3 months they mean it. You probably won’t be able to race MM so worth considering supporting from the sidelines etc.

Mine was ok for riding a commute/road bike for short distances 10 days after cast came off. (28th of feb was cast removal day)

Still not been on an off road mtb ride as the bars feel ‘funny’. Got a wang kink in the wrist and left arm is shorter buy about 2cms ish. Oh an i get married in may so i have been warned….

    Sorry for bad news.

Cheers bikechain from the sound of that I could be off the bike for a while as apparently its quite a bad fracture.

Odly it doesnt hurt half as much as other stuff I’ve broken, managed to ride back to the car and then drive home!

Did mine last October Distal Radial, 4 places 1 through joint. Did it October 10th and didn’t ride at all until a quick one, against my physio’s advice I must add, on December 21st, wrist was aching for several days after, so all I’ll say is that the 3 months is very believable unfortunately.

On a plus, I kept my gloves on until I got seen at A&E, drove there, like you say, hurts less than expected, anyway the doctor, and indeed the specialist I saw several day later suspected I might need it pinning, however when I saw the specialist again he said that he suspected keeping the glove on supported the wrist slightly an printed any bone displacement, so I ended up not needing surgery, which was a bonus, you may be lucky like me.

Get better soon, just don’t rush it.

I snapped the end off my radius so it was plated back together. Clearly a bit worse than yours, but I think it was 3 months before I gingerly rode off road again. Make sure you do all your physio exercises, that’ll help you get some strength back. I’d forget about MM and just concentrate on healing, I’m sure that’s the best approach for the long term. GWS 🙂

Hope you don’t need plating as that will add time.

Mine took nearly a year for full recovery (but periods of biking in between), 3 ops, plate, then pin to stabalise, then pins out as they caused tendinitis.

As every one says, follow physio advice. I have full movement and no issues. First off road fall post break was great reassurance that all was well 🙂

    Heal quick
