Quick question, im trying to decide on forks for my Orange st4 build. I know the are designed round a 120mm fork but can take up to 140mm, im considering a Rockshox Revelation with U turn adjustable travel from 120mm to 150mm or 140mm depending on model year, also looking at Pikes although im thinking they may be a bit heavy.

Fox forks are also in the running but struggling to get them 2nd hand for a decent price.

Id like the longer travel fork incase i decide to change frames in the future, so if im running a 150mm fork at 120mm will it do it any damage or effect performance?

Aren’t Rockshox forks still internal adjustable, so you might not need a U-Turn fork, just alter the internal spacers as you need to… Would be worth confirming with a suspension specialist though.

I have U-Turn Rev’s and Reba’s (3 in all) and love em, but IIRC some ppl complain about top out knocking when running in a lower amount of travel, I’ve never experienced this but it’s worth bearing in mind.
Get the std ones & adjust internally, if you really worried about it.

Putting the reducers to run a rock shox at a lower travel wont damage it at all, just make sure you get one you can add the spacers in. Pikes are a bit heavy but the U-turn doesn’t effect performance. (Well only if that bloody rubber piece slips down the spring but that’s only on the coils).

IMO avoid forks with lock down travel adjusters such as a Talas, they are pront to breaking or going wrong in time, I just don’t trust those designs.

All of the Fox forks are internally adjustable using spacers as well. I *think* both the TALAS and standard 32’s (ie you can make a TALAS 150 a TALAS 140) The Fox online guide doesn’t mention it but the 150’s are supplied with a 10mm travel spacer. Mojo have spacers from 10mm up to 40mm

If you fancy some U-Turn Revs, I’ve got some 110-140mm’s I was going to put on Ebay. You’d need a thru-axle wheel though.

I think it depends on the fork/year with Fox, some you can reduce down but you cant increase travel.

Call Mojo if you are in doubt, they are v. helpful over the phone.

Yep, 2009s – mind you I only paid a little bit over that a year ago and now they are over £500 on CR, everythings gone up sooo much.

i’d recommend some sektors bought from Loco tuning off here for a good price. i have a pair on my inbred running at 130mm wound down. drop him a line and see what price he’ll give you. maxle light mind.
alternatively i have some qr/9mm 140 fox floats that came off my orange five if you’re interested? about 3 weeks use. i switched them out for pikes. they’re in good nick. stickers a bit scuffed but otherwise good.

None should take damage… But not all will perform all that well. Rockshox u-turn is a bit slow to adjust but works properly at all lengths so it’s not the best if you just want a climbing setting but IMO definately is the best if you want to keep it at a short setting. TALAS is the other way round. ATA2 is fine til it breaks.

yep – the sektors go down to 110. FWIW i did not notice additional weight over the coil revelations i had before. nice forks. very pleased with them.

Cheers Del, it id not just a climbing setting im after Northwind. Im looking to run them at 120mm most of the time.

So Rockshox u turn is better and more reliable? I do prefer the feeling of Rockshox forks anyway.

Wouldn’t say it’s better but it’s more tailored for you, it’s a true multi-length fork which personally I don’t think’s really true of any of the others. As for reliable, well, other than Marzocchi and accursed Lyrik 2-steps I don’t think any of these things are unreliable (Marz have dealt with the unreliability by…er… not selling any travel adjust forks any more)
