Anyone got any links to accomidation in the dolomites for august... I assumed it wouldn't be too expensive, but I appear to be quite wrong!
Which other areas in / around italy should I consider? Whats mayrhoffon like?
Going with the missus for our summer holidays - no biking allowed but needs to feature pretty scenary and plenty of decent walking / hiking?
Ideas? I'm stumped and will be in the dog house if I don't come up with something!
Slovenia - just next door and a world away.
Been skiing in Passo Tonale a few times as its fairly cheap, keep meaning to go back in the summer. Lots of walking and biking, plenty of big mountains. Trying to remember the name of the nice hotel, its got a spa and really nice rooms... or ponte de legno (sp?) just down the hill is a prettier town.
My GF recommends Slovenia, the area around the Julian Alps. Hotel standards good, people friendly, stuff is cheap.

Have you tried looking at Verese in Lombardia (not too far from Lake Garda) You've got all sorts of accom set in a busy city(ish) with the western Doli's not too far away. Or you could try south of Como in one of the low lying non ski towns. You'll need to open your eyes a bit for accom and may not get a "room with a view" but for sure it's all stunning anyhoo's and the mountains are right on your right heal.

Where in the dolomites have you looked? Colletts holidays do fully inclusive holidays with guided walks in stunning scenery - not the cheapest, but they're getting hammered by the euro so prolly the same as anywhere in the Eurozone.
Another vote for Slovenia here - moutains in the north west around kransjka gora and bovec very scenic and loads of walking available. Only downaide are flights to Ljubjlana from uk are limited, alternative is to fly into klagenfurt austria or trieste italy.
We found it was cheaper in the primarily German speaking bits. We stayed in Toblach / Dobbiaco which was alright. The posh Italian ski resorts like Cortina d'ampezza were very expensive, the sort of places with loads of high fashion shops selling fur coats.
