They are not the same, but the difference between them is infinitely small and exactly equal to the difference between “too hot” and “freezing cold” on my shower controls.

I think you’l find the difference between 2 and 1.99.. is 66.66%

Are you sure GrahamS, not wishing to start another huuuuuuuge thread, but I understood that 0.999… is the same as 1.

I hasten to add, I’m not going to get involved in a protracted argument about it though. 😀

nickc: yeah, thanks to the weird maths around infinity and infinitely recurring numbers, it is actually provably the same.

One of the philosophical arguments is whether having an infinitely small difference is equivalent to being equal. Which it sort of is IMO.
