    Apparently it’s a Circumhorizontal Arc

That second one’s a sundog isn’t it? But the first one absolutely stunning, clearly an Alien cloaking device for observation purposes.

Never know what they were called but when I lived up in Moray I used to see those all the time – usually waiting just above my house when I was driving home from work

    That’s an awesome photo Matt.

It’s been good out in the hills last couple of days hasn’t it. Bloody lovely

I’d say Circum horizontal Arc when comparing the pix on Google with ref to Sun Dogs.

Heres the same pix HDR’r in picasa to define it a bit.

Looks like a sundog to me too. I saw one out on today’s ride as well, perfect conditions for it.

Circumhorizontal arcs have the colour spectrum running top to bottom, sundogs left-right or right-left.

Looks like a Dolphin after a Ready Brek breakfast ( other breakfast cereals are available )

    That was my understanding too.

Oh and the top one is an orographic cloud. They form over mountains when air is forced up over higher ground and cools, thereby condensing the water vapour in the air roughly in the shape of the terrain. Ace to look at especially if lit up by morning or evening sun.

There were beautiful stacks of lenticular clouds over the Ochils yesterday morning. They were lit by the sunrise in the East and each layer was a different colour/shade. Stunning.

Redthunder, we saw the same thing whilst driving down the A38 today, never seen that sort of thing before….it only seemed visable with sunglasses on!

This is a circumzenithal arc, picture taken by my wife mid June 2010, in Worcester.
There are a few more pics on my Flickr page.

scaled, when i first looked at your picture I was thinking “hmmm, grainy shot of a shiny moon or a really weird picture of the sun”

We think it’s the Moon + Jupiter.

The gf was only taking a picture of “La Bella Luna” for the toddler!

Planet? Are you sure its not just ghosting in the lens from the bright moon? Looks too big to be a planet seen from earth.
