Quite a bad photo of a DHC4 Caribou, which are cool anyway, but this particular one was being used to try and restore and recover a B29 that force landed in Greenland then spent 50 years under snow. So first they basically crashed this thing into Greenland so they could check out the area. Then they flew it back to Thule, put a bulldozer in it, then crashed it back into Greenland to unload the bulldozer. Because why did they need a bulldozer? To build a runway!

It’s basically the builder’s transit of the plane world.

English Electric Canberra picture taken today at Folkestone air show, really did steal the show. Was flying with a Hunter as well. Both planes that my Dad worked on.

you have to love russian tech, the beautifully engineered “state of the art” vectored thrust nozzle in titanium and the pop riveted panels that wouldn’t be out of place in wwII.

In all seriousness, no one builds an airframe like the Russians. Go to the US for the avionics and the weapons systems, but for airframes, you have to go a long way to beat the Mig 29 and Su-35.

Also, one of my favourite planes in airfix as a kid (Purely for the smile!), the Curtis Kittyhawk:

There was a rumor / urban legend that the reason the Russian stuff flies so well is because it’s all hand panel beaten. So the entire surface of the aircraft is covered in tiny dimples like on a golf ball.

I’ve been up close tho Russian aircraft and the are not dimpled. They are very rough and ready.

Don’t know if they’re permenantly based there but they use lakenheath/mildenhall a lot which appears to be very busy today!

FAO bencooper – Some notes re your found pictures!

The general location of the desert photos is RAF El Adem, in c.’67-’69
Photo 2 – Nearest the camera is a 1 Squadron jet.
Photo 6 – Chap in the flying suit is 43 squadron
Photo 16 – 1 Squadron hangar at West Raynham
Photo 22 – 54 Squadron markings on closest to camera

Will see if I can get more, but you could try the 1 or 54 Sqdn associations for more details.
