    Hi

My neglected 1994 kona lavadome is starting to look fairly rusty now (see pic). Would folks say this is (a) nothing to worry about (b) should be treated (c) terminal?

    Cheers

Firstly, thanks for posting the image link – how did you get it to work?

Secondly, what do you mean by polish out/through exactly?

    Cheers

Thing is, its not super thin Tange Prestige tubing, so you might be ok for light duties, but the doubts are there.
    Time to retire IMO.

Take it to the local spray shop, and they probably be able to blast it for you, then you can see what the metal’s like underneath. If the metal’s pretty thick (as bigyinn suggests), you might get away with it.

There looks to be a reasonable amount of debris in the BB. That may be a cause for concern if it’s more than mud.

Only way to really tell is to strip it back.

Blasting should show you what you are dealing with.

Edit … I’d that the beginning of a crack through the rust at the bottom of the ST?

Wouldn’t question that rust for a second.

Unless you’re doing bad drop offs.

Thanks for the replies guys. The bikes got sentimental value so I’ll look out a local spray shop for blasting.

#letmetalktomark : yes the bottom bracket was what worried me too – there’s a fair amount of rust dust there. I’m guessing that might imply there’s internal rust or that it’s gone all the way through somewhere.

careful with the sandblasting, might do more damage than the rust.
    paintstripper and elbow grease.

Flappy wheel on a drill? Maybe a small dremel one so you can get into the tight bits.
