    Yay or nay?

Nay, in general. It’ll catch on the mech and cassette. That said, it’ll probably be better than walking, so at a push better than nothing.

I carry 9,10 and 11 links on the trail for the varying bikes the family use 🙂

9 on a 10 is okay, certainly for emergency purposes

My lads bike needed an emergency link on a ride – 9 speed link to a 10 speed chain – put it on as a rescuer item and it’s still on 6 months later – runs fine (1 x 10 setup with a NW ring) 😀

On a 10sp chain it’s fine as I used one on a couple of Shimano chains and I still use one on a Sram chain on the hardtail. Not tried with 11sp tho.

9 on a 10 is fine. My Amazon did a whole chain worth of wear with that setup.

    9 ime is absolutely fine on a 10 and 10 on an 11. Haven’t tried 9 to 11.
