Anyone successfully managed to run such set up or is it an urban legend?

Should work fine as Road flat bar shifters have the same lever pull as STIs

I ran a XT M751 9 speed long cage rear mech with a set of 6600 Ultegra 10 speed standard drop bar shifters, on a 10 speed setup; close to what you are looking at I assume.
Still here to tell the tale.

I’ve got that set-up on my bike – works fine

I’ve had that set up a few times and it basically does work but can overshift slightly so keep an eye on that. I’ve had to tweak the cable routing to sort it in the past.
