Was wondering if its possible to put a lower geared mtb cassette on my rb until my legs have improved. Not looking to change any other hardware though.

If a rb is a road bike, then yes. Check what size cassette the rear much can cope with or fit a mountainbike mech.

no problem, i use an 8spd pg850 sram on my cx with an mtb mech

cheap and work well, can totally abuse the cx and not worry too much about the cost of cassette/chain/ring

Ah, so an mtb mech is required then, was hoping not to have to invest, will just have to persecer with only doig 15mph uphill.

Assume you have 8 speed STIs?

Depends on the mech. I’ve got a 30 on mine (which is stock) and my lad ran a 32 with his. It’s part of the specifications for the mech, so if you know what it is you can look it up.
