I get that chains and cassettes and shifters need to be matched, but which hubs do 10 speed cassettes need?

A friend was going to get some 10 speed kit for his currently 8 speed bike and I thought it wouldn’t work, have I given him the wrong advice? I assumed he was restricted to staying with 8. Are cassettes a standard width divided by the number of gears, or is the spacing specific to each?

    Are freehub bodies universal?

    Cheers

10 speed shimano & sram cassettes will fit on 8, 9 or 10 speed Shimano freehubs.

Yep, Simon’s right. Some very early 10 speed road hubs (7800 and 6700) are 10 speed specific, otherwise they’re totally cross compatible.

The reason you need a 10 speed chain is because it has to be thinner to fit on the cassette which is a lot more tightly packed compared to an 8.

6700 hubs are 8/9/10 speed compatible njee. There were some early Ultegra wheels denoted WH-6600 which were 10 speed only, perhaps that is what you are thinking of.
