This evening, I installed a Shimano XT (CS-M737) 8 speed cassette on an older (2005 ish) American Classic made hub. The cassette lockring was torqued to spec with a torque wrench. When I then put the wheel in the truing stand, the cassette wouldn't spin!
Upon removing the cassette, I saw that there was a spacer attached to the inside of the cassette that has a sharp lip that interfered with the hub's pawl seal. I also have an 8 speed (CS-M900) XTR cassette as well which does not have the spacer.
But when I look parallel to the cogs, the XTR casssette's splined section ends flush with the big cog, while the XT's is offset a bit towards the smaller cogs. No doubt this is why there is a spacer.
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to get this to work?
