    Banter today at work

6months on submarine would be on a covert operation and wouldn’t be surfacing.
    Or
    6 months on space station

What you would you choose and why ?

    I’m still undecided

And this submarine has 6 months worth of food?
I’m pretty sure the UK Navy subs can only carry 10-12 weeks worth at a push?

    Peasy. Space.

Better view and you have no gravity; which I bet never gets boring.

Submarine death means you drown or starve off oxygen … I think the latter is better death.

Space station death probably means your body may explode? Yes? (do they explode due to expanding pressure?)

I prefer space station death if that means my body would explode suddenly rather than drowning …

space station – you can look out the window for starters – plus if you get a leak, then its trying to get out at 14psi, rather than trying to get in at 700psi – so with the space station you have a realistic chance of escape, rather than the whole thing collapsing around you like a tin can.

Space station, that would be special, a submarine could be just like being locked in a basement.

space station .. You can always jump in the sea and feel wet but not fly around and look at the world from space.

Space Station, with barely a second thought.

    – If you make it onto the space station you are likely to be contributing to some degree to the future of mankind.
    – You get to experience weightlessness (positives and negatives in this, but six months should be ok)
    – You get to see the earth from a privileged perspective, most that have experienced it say that it changes their outlook on our world.
    – If you never did another thing for the rest of your life you’ll have been to low earth orbit, which is pretty good going for our generation.

    Why would anyone pick submarine?

    Space station. Much better view.

To be honest I don’t even understand why that’s a question. Why would anyone prefer a submarine??

    Submarine, if it’s this one:

If we’re bound by reality and submarines or space stations that actually exist, then the ISS.

Nope. Your body isn’t that highly pressurised.

If it was then people would go pop at the top of Everest or when skydiving.

You can but it’s right next to that window (Cupola) so you may have company.

If you haven’t seen it before, watch this fascinating tour of the (mock up) of the ISS. Very cool.

No, you don’t explode: Our skin is actually very stretchy so you may swell up a lot, but you won’t explode (which may actually be worse).

yeah, but if it’s going to be coming out at any great rate, either hold tight or buckle up !

How they poo is apparently one of the questions most frequently asked questions of the ISS astronauts.

They answered it many times, the answer is not glamorous:

Do you reckon you could get the internet in the space station?
It’s pretty close to lots of satellites after all.

    Yup, they have net access.

Oh, and ISS of course. Who wants to go on a sub?!?

Mind, a lot easier to get on a sub.

If I could get to space in a submarine and have proper toilets then I would say space.
There again if the submarine had a window and cruised the Red Sea…oh I don’t know.

Flipping that one round, how do you flush a submarine bog with 700psi of water trying to get in?

I would have thought the chances of getting to space have a higher risk of death compared with going to the bottom of the sea?

Do you reckon you’d make the news for spending 6 months on a sub?
