Unless your shifts are absolutely silky, for my money it’s the most rewarding ‘upgrade’, every time.

    Gear cables = £10
“proper” singlespeed front ring = £30
    Thornbridge Jaipur, 4 pints = £10 (ish)

If you run older Fox forks get a set of the SKF seals & any oil you need, then give em a service.

Only one shifter, so cables = £5 or so.

    Leaving more for the Jaipur.

    Which is nice.

Take your missus to Wagamammas and get some Yaki Soba, chilli squid and those beef skewer things. Wash it down with some ginger beer and then some wasabi chocolate cake. You’ll probably have some change left.

How about gear cables, some decent lube and some cleaning products. Maybe a decent set of Allen keys?

Maybe even a workstand for the bike?

    Are you running tubeless tyres…?
If not, maybe try a conversion kit.

This made the single biggest transformation to my riding by a long way.

humm plenty off food for thought, but a new shifter sounds best, i have narrowed it down to 3 choices, either the xt@40, the deore @16, the slx @27 or the saint @50. just wondering whats the diffrence between the slx and sain thay look nearly the same except the gold on the saint one? am i missing something?

I’ve not used them off-road but on the road bike I’ve just fitted a full set of KCNC cables, they’re ace and didn’t need any oil/grease. Those and SP41 by the meter is cheep so probably £10-£12 for the lot. And a bottle of ‘cable magic’ lube for another fiver.

Spend the rest on somethign out of the folowing.
Tubeless if you’re not already, getto costs about £20 inc a bottle of stans.
Tyres – although £50 doesnt go very far these days
    Suspension service kit.
Foam grips – biggest weight saving (thnik some are silly at 18g Vs upto 200g for lock ons) and lots of comfort and (IMO) more grip than rubber grips.
