50 mile two-day tour with the kids

Just been to the Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival kids session. It was great, thoroughly recommended. There was a great wee Sustrans-commissioned film from Lee Craigie showing her doing the Caledonia Way. The kids (10 and 8) loved the look of it, and we came away discussing where we could go on a two day tour of something similar. A days biking (canal tow path, Sustrans-style tracks etc), B&B or YHA, then bike back the next day. Any ideas or past experience? Edinburgh based, so somewhere accessible from here.
Spean Bridge to Fort Augustus would be largely offroad, 25-odd miles.
Any alternatives in the Trossachs or around Aviemore? Anywhere really!
Richpips off here (with his son) had a great wee film too – inspirational stuff.

Callander to Killin on NCN7 is 25 miles each way.

Almost completely off-road. Has one very steep section above Lochearnhead that might need a push up, and a section back out of Killin that might need a wee push too.

Aviemore – Boat of Garten – Nethy Bridge – Aviemore would be around the right distance. Again a few short sections of steeper terrain, but it would depend on your kids and how much hurry you are in. Certainly feels like more of an adventure 🙂

Thanks Colin, and yip that Killin route looks a suitable one for them and has the benefit of a grub stop at Mhor84. Excellent knowledge and advice as always, much appreciated.

Make sure you have the up-to-date map. NCN7 used to take a road route through Balquhidder. It’s now possible to get back onto the old railway track bed after Strathyre instead.

There’s often a wee food van at the top of Glen Ogle too. If you reach there going North it’s only a downhill into Killin but it might be an incentive when heading back south again.

The burger van only seems to be there for summer weekends and holidays (might always be there but only open at these times)

Am sure it used to be open more often, great venison burgers and mugs of tea if you do catch it…

OR as above, but stay at Killin, then head onto Pitlochry the next day and get the train back (may be a bit far?) But would seem like more of a trip.

I’m not quite so sure I’d want to take a 8 and 10 year old along the road to Pitlochry though. I doubt they’d manage the Rob Roy Way. (And then there’s the issue of getting to Callander).
