Don’t fancy splashing out on a proper tool when a couple of bits of PVC will do the trick.

I guess 40mm is the nearest/cleanest sizing I’m gonna get to 1.5″? Coupling necessary to seat over the race.

Cut a slot in the race instead?

Buy a Hope crown race instead 🙂

For a fiver, it’s cheaper than the tool!

Result. Couldn’t remember which one I had sitting around – turns out it’s a Hope. Sorted. Ta.

I’ve installed a crown race with some piping but cut a slot in the bottom of the pipe, overlapped the pipe, used a ziptie to hold it to the right diameter then roughly filed the end so it was flush. Tapped it in with a rubber mallet. Super bodgy but it worked, used a similar method to knock in a hub spacer as well.

I use MDPE inserts for this job. I find them pretty robust, but still ‘soft’ enough not to mash things. Cheap, come in a range of sizes and are easily available from your local plumbers merchant / farm suppliers.

    That.

Unless it’s actually a Crown Race of course – and not a baseplate.
