I manage a small charity website at http://www.swedauk.org. This afternoon when trying to view the site I get a 406 Not Acceptable error:

    Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource / could not be found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Apache/2.2.15 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.15 OpenSSL/0.9.7a mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.13 Server at http://www.swedauk.org Port 80

Nothing has changed on the website or, to my knowledge, my local pc (I could view the site from work this morning). Tech. support are telling me that something to do with my computer and/or connection is tripping a security module and ask whether I get the same error from other machines.

So, can anyone see the site or is there an error and assuming it’s my computer/connection what can I do about it? Tech. support say that the security module can be disabled, but don’t recommend it.

works ok for me too – try your phising settings- assuming you are using IE here?

Yes, I’m using IE8 but it was visible the last time I looked on Wednesday and the computer hasn’t been on since then. I’m also running Kaspersky Internet Security which updates itself regularly so I suppose it could be that.

    — Edit —

Disabling Kaspersky makes no difference, I suppose it could be something to do with the BT broadband connection (errors with their DNS servers in the past have affected the site).

I think that error is coming from the server witht he site on rather than your local pc, tbh.

So why can other people see it? I have pop3 and ftp access and can access CPanel but I’m getting locked out of http. Rebooting the pc hasn’t done anything. Our routers reset a few times over the last few days due to an electical fault tripping our trip swith so I suppose that that might be doing something.

It’s a server error. You need to check the logs.

It’s back. I restarted the BT Homehub from the settings page. I assume that the sudden power outages from the trip going messed something up.

Thanks for the help, hopefully it’ll stay available!

I suspect you may have an accepts header buffer overflow. Many(most) webservers have an accepts buffer set at 256 bytes. When using microsoft intenet explorer the accepts header can be longer than 256 bytes as the number of document types entered into the accepts header increases as more applications are installed. EG office. Some users will have a header that is shorter than 256 bytes which is why some people can see the website while others can not.

    Solutions.

(1)Delete the accepts entry in the registry.
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Accepted Documents

(2)change your webserver accepts buffer to, say, 512 bytes

    (3) Use a proper browser such as chrome or firefox that manages it’s accepts header properly.

The internet explorer issue is a problem acknowledged by Microsoft as something that they should sort out.

This microsoft developer blog is interesting

    Hope that helps
