4 days in the UK, where would you go?

Hi,

Next month I'll be taking my wife and son to the UK. It's there first visit (of many, one hopes) it doesn't matter to the boy, as he will only be 7 months old.

I have to see the parents, of course, and I'm working on taking in Mountain Mayhem (straight off the plane, I hasten to add) although not to sure about racing, but will be there for the overnight soak.

Anyway, one of the weeks we are over, we have 3 or 4 days free from obligations, where should we go?
We won't be bringing bikes, pram, carry cot etc., have taken up my luggage allowance.

So far, I've come up with Lakes, Cornwall (I'd like to see the Eden project as I have never been), St. Davids and that area.

I'm sure there are more exciting ones then that.

West Coast of Scotland if you can be bothered with the travelling. But Cornwall to Scotland is a long slog

Cornwall to anywhere is a long slog.

Plus add in St Davids (people forget how far that is), if you travel from London - when you get to Cardiff you are only 1/2 way.

I'm thinking of just staying in 1 place for the 4 days, or just around the area.

Which part of West Coast of Scotland.

I was thinking of training it up to Northern Scotland, then onto Skye, but I think it's pushing the time

Depends what you want really. Oban is a nice town to spend a couple of days in. Glencoe is still one of the most stunningly beautiful areas I've ever been to. Skye is amazing as well.

Cornwall is nice, and you are sort of at the right end of the country starting from Malvern. The eden project is okay, but not super exciting - but the beaches and towns are lovely.

Given you're based south westish, I'd just do stuff round there, and not bother with anywhere else - once you've factored in travel to cornwall and back to malvern, you'd basically have taken up half a day each end already - 4 days to go to Cornwall, have an explore, and go back would be just about enough.

Hi Joe,

Yeah , was thinking that. Might get a bit of Dartmoor in as well. I remember once going through that area (I think, or it could be Exmoor), and seeing a sign for waterfall or something (that was a very long time ago though)

Don't try to do too much - you'll be shagged out and sick of it. (Aren't you the guy who lives in China?) Have one day just for lazing around.

If you're in Malvern: Oxford, Bath.

You can ride local, do interesting touristy things, S Wales, N Devon, Cotswolds etc - or do you really fancy all that driving in the UK rathr than doing things?

redthunder - North Shields would see you 2 hrs from Edinburgh (with all that beautiful countryside in between), minutes from Tynemouth (with castle, priory and great beaches), 70 miles from the Lakes and not far from Beamish. Seems fair enough!

if your in Malvern, with a baby, do you really want to travel for hours? Been to the eden project from Cheltenham and it is a long way. Even from the SOs mum in Barnstaple it is a fair drive. Just to add that the drive to Barnstaple can be a horrible drive depending on the M5 and how many caravans are heading to devon/cornwall.

The cotswolds, bourton, stow, slaughters, etc are all very pretty. Bath can be a nice place to spend a few hours, not so keen on Oxford. Could try Stratford. Basically the US tourist route, London, oxford, bath, stratford.

South West England. You can do all the stuff that you want to do in Cornwall, plus you've got great beaches and surf, excellent walking and riding on Dartmoor and the Quantocks, fabulous food, bags of history, resort type holiday towns if that's what the kids want. What's not to like ?

Yeah I'm the guy in China, originally born and bred (although I didn't breed there myself, that I waited till I got here) in Malvern.
