    Hello there, off to Edinburgh at the start of Dec with Mrs APF, so thought I’d consult the STW oracle for some tips.

    Looking for a couple of attractions to visit, I know of the castle, that buried street place and the camera obscura. Anything else?

    Also going to want a couple of mid-price restaurants, central, we’ll be staying just off the Royal Mile.

    And finally, any other tips? All advice gratefully received.

    Have you been to the buried street place? I’d vote for it. And the botanic garden, if that’s your thing.

    Arthurs Seat.

    There’s a fudge shop on the royal mile which is fantastic

    There used to be some kind of museum near Arthurs seat which was quite cool.

    We did one of those spooky tour things one evening which was surprisingly good fun – the buried street place was part of it. Scottish house of parliament is interesting if you’re into architecture. National Gallery is very good if you like that sort of thing.

    Cafe Royale? Good pub with island bar and nice mix of beers and local spirits menu. Good bar food and restaurant if you want to sit down.
    Portrait gallery is nice and liked the cafe.

    Mary King’s Close (that buried street thing), wander up Arthurs Seat, Angels with Bagpipes on the royal Mile to eat (good idea to book well in advacne though), drinks/cocktails from a teapot in the Roseleaf bar in Leith. Zoo isn’t bad either if you like that sort of thing.

    skip the castle, way over-rated. if you want a proper castle, jump on the train and head for stirling. castle not far from station iirc
    mary king’s close – definitely.
    camera obscura, top of the royal mile – 5 floors of optical trickery
    drink your way along rose st
    royal yacht britannia’s suppossed to be good, but never been myself
    nice day? train to sth queensferry and hop on a boat to inchcolm, island itself is interesting with great views of the bridges
    EDIT and if you are going to the zoo, go on to the zoo’s web site and book a slot to see the pandas, only slightly less rare than scottish tories in westminster donchaknow

    Few restuarants below are all reasonably priced. Last one is a Thai with great views (assuming the weather plays ball) across the city towards the river Forth and on to fife.

    Have Cullen Skink(spelling?) at Deacon Brodie’s pub on the Royal Mile.
    Smoked haddock and potato broth – bloody beautiful. I want some now.

    The Dome is a stunning building inside – cocktails were good when I went – on the street parallel with Princes Street. Nice burgers there too. Quite pricey as far as I can recall.

    Tourist bus trip is ace to get your bearings.

    We went to the science museum down by Hollyrood – that was pretty good.

    There’s an awful curry house on the RM on the left near the top as you look up – don’t bother – crap and v expensive!

    Ghost walk was a bit theatrical and not that great – apparently we were being ‘followed by a ghost’ when we were underground.

    Overall, Edinburgh is a fantastic place for break – you will love it.

    Brings back good memories from honeymoon 3 years ago 🙂

    Do the bus tour
    fishers or fishers in the city
    The shore (bar)
    The Kings walk (gastro pub / bar) on the shore on leith
    Dynamic Earth ( that museum near Arthur’s seat) is OK
    THE Museum is worth a trip

    Edit: if you do head to the shore, look out for an argumentative guy on a tandem not wearing a helmet !

    Mint. Me and mrs went, ate everything, got drunk, staff were all nice, didnt cost a fortune, went back for lunch the next day.

    Can’t believe no-one has mentioned the Pentlands yet … Edinburgh’s premier mountain bike attraction!
