I’ve been thinking about a double chainring, single sprocket setup on my cross bike….

    I know, I know, it’s a dumb idea but….

I thought a rear mechanism as a tensioner would work…anyone tried it and got any pics??

I “tried” it when my rear mech got stuck in one gear, it was pants. 🙂

    Why not have 2×2…
If the difference between cogs at each end matches then the chain length should be the same.

Is this the name of a bike built from a Messerschmitt crashed in Hammersmith?!

Google “Dinglespeed”, as described by takisawa2.

There’s been a few of these threads recently,

Does your frame have singlespeed compatable dropouts?
If so, dingle speed is a good option. If ran it a couple of time. works a treat if all the teeth add up to the same on both combos.

If its a vertical dropout frame, just stick with the sping loaded tensioner, ones with more wrap like pauls, rohloff etc will handle the jump between cogs better.

I did, I was running sliding dropouts and didn’t want any tensioner so stuck a chainring in the middle to take up the slack. It was a PITA but good to get a higher gear as some of my rides were 50% road.

2 gears for off road…I’d stick with 1, the challenge makes it fun 🙂

I tend to ride dinglespeed on my commute, been thinking about it myself. Very rarely change gears on the back but change from 32-44 on the front for subways, junctions and crossings etc…

How does one change gear on the dinglespeed?
Do you have to get off the bike and move the wheel in and out?

    Yep,

two cogs front, two cogs rear, swap the chain over.
