    If i was to use a 22/32 crankset ( i.e remove to outer ring which i hardly ever use) with a 11-32 cassette, could i get away with using a short cage MTB rear mech?

    I run a short cage XTR with an 11-32 cassette and 24/36 chainrings on one bike, and it's perfect. Wouldn't want to run a longer cage mech to be honest.

    In mtb groupsets I think there's only long & medium, except for Saint

    I also think medium would be fine, even if you went up to a 36 front

    I'm running that exact mech on one bike with 22/36 (& 11-30 8 speed cassette) it'd manage a 34T sprocket easily too.

    set it up with the chain as short as possible in your 32/32 gear. it'll cope with the full spread but you'll never use the granny with any higher than 4th gear anyway.

    The one i am looking at is the short cage one here;

    yeh, GS, that's medium (or at least it's in the middle of the 3 lengths thay do across road & mtb groupsets)
