You’ve already shown sub HR potential. I think your heart rate zones are off, that or your body is tired! Well done Kryton.

I’ll go for sick / tired but I do need to test my HR. I do have slightly green bodily fluids this afternoon, and also this is officially end of season ride day – it’s been turbo ride or race since last September. Time for a few weeks off, beer and food without restriction and family holiday before messing about at Torq end August then getting back to dedication in September for Autumn Winter training.

Dirty rider, that’s the thing about competitive riding, you always feel crap and questionable at some point during a race, but then you finish and want to do it all over again – but better!

Are any of you chaps running Hollowtech Hope BBs on your TT bikes? The plastic labyrinth seals on mine are annoying me, being a bit draggy and making scraping noises so i am thinking of cutting the plastic rim off to convert them into spacers. Good/terrible idea? The bike is used for training etc as well as races but mostly in the dry

Yup green snot, pounding headache and swollen neck glands.

Brendonbeener, there are many ways around this but maybe a start is to pick up a copy of a training guide – maybe one of Joe Friels for example as guidance.

You’ll then want some kind of plan based on available time. His books include all the advice to build one, and if you want some geeky incentive or to use a turbo trainer you could buy a subscription to something like Training Peaks for number crunching, or TrainerRoad for some online interactive Turbo plans. You may also want to enter a few events with a strict emphasis on find out where it’s “difficult” for you e.g. Hills, pace, power, sprints, endurance. IMHO it’s very important to find out physically and mentally what type of rider you are, all else leads to disappointment.

For example, I’m a 20year plus social MTBer.. I joined a predominantly road based club to get fitter for 12/24 hour events, ended up road racing which I found I’m rubbish at, went back to short course MTB racing which I’m better and much happier at, and becuase I can’t leave the 1 hour turbo sessions alone (I feel fat frumpy and depressed if I don’t exercise, have a busy job and 2 kid family) ended up here learning about time trailing this year to get some competitive use out of my road bike – similar format of blasting yourself over intervals for 30-60 minutes. Competitively that’s been a 3 year journey but I’m now a recognised “face” and have established my “pack position” on the MTB circuit which allows me to have goals and know where to train/improve, who to aim for and what thier strengths and weakness are. Well almost, it helps to have an outsider looking in at this point 🙂

Joining a club is good, you’ll get to ride with a whole bunch of people stronger and faster than you in all areas which is a good learning / training incentive IMO.

Good luck with it, it can get as geeky, introspective and obsessive as you do/don’t want it to be.

Did a 10 PB on Saturday night riding at Levans for the first time doing a 21:27 coming 5th out of 80odd. Should be happy but was hoping for more tbh ( Levans is regarded as quite a quick course ) but as ever my pacing for it was abysmal. The out leg (it’s basically an out and back course on a dual carriageway, with a roundabout at 5.3miles sending you back to the finish) was into a slight headwind so I was expecting to push it a bit more then have a tailwind for the return. Got to the roundabout averaging 352w then limped home only averaging 341w. Just wished I’d of held back a bit more at the start but hey ho, I’ll live and learn. I’m back doing the same course middle of next month so I’ll see if I can improve. 🙂
Pic of me on the course (yes I know my pin came out on one corner of the number and may of cost me a little time. I’ve given the lad who pinned it on for me a dammed good thrashing )

It’s soooo annoying ! I do it every time. Get the 3..2..1..go then I’m like Geronimo !!!!! Two miles later and my av power is reading 370. I then get britney spears sing “up’s I did it again” going round in my head 😳
Have you got anymore TT’s planned this season Premier ?

Haha it was easy done with that headwind!! Haven’t ridden it for a while and forgot how rough the surface is on the descent. Will probably do a few, there’s very little road races on so will have a look. How about you? Recognised the bike just as you rolled up to the line, I was a few behind you but didn’t spot you after

Got a 10m two up TT tomorrow on the PETTS course, a 25m (my first one) at the end of the month then back to Levens on the 18th. If you see me give us a shout :-). I might also enter some of the points grabber crits they have at salt ayre on a Saturday. Certainly not expecting anything from them, I’ve never raced (only done Gravity enduro on the mtb) so they’ll be more of a learning curve in view to giving them (as well as TT ) a good go next year.

Ah good stuff, salt ayres a good circuit – I’ve done the last few of the Tues eve events there. Not doing the Levens 10 as it clashes with one of the few road races that are left. Might do one on Rainford the day before though

Rode what was probably my last ten of the season last night. Pissing down with rain and a headwind up the hill to the turn. Despite that i was riding it as well as i have recently and feel i may have beaten my PB of 22:59. Unfortunately though i was disrupted 3 times! On the way to the turn i was put into the verge and almost to a stop by a convoy of trucks carrying windmill parts under police escort, at the turn (a dead turn in the road) a van decided to ignore the marshall and keep going, so i had to brake and track stand for a moment. Then on the way down the hill a truck passed and got stuck behind a rider in front but an old man in a panda decided to get in between us then jammed on the brakes making me skid, almost into the back of him (some expletives may or may not have been directed his way). I was held up behind them for a few hundred metres sat up. Eventually came home in 23″19 and pretty miffed.
May be able to take part in the club 50 which was postponed in July if i’m home in time. But will miss the last tens and hillclimb.
    So my season in Numbers.
    10 22:59
    25 58:36
    50 02:04:19 (with a cold)

Pretty happy all in all, with PB’s in all 3 distances and a few local wins. Was also scheduled to do a 100 in Invergordon a few weeks ago but that was cancelled due to wind.

Need to work out what i want from next season and how to achieve that. Mostly though i’ll need to try and not turn into a fetter Keith Richards over winter again

I appreciate people are still racing but i’d be interested to see others season round ups.

Some new go-faster toys have arrived. A forward Thomson seatpost has moved the position 5cm for a flatter back. I added a matching -10 degree 130 mm stem for that long and low flat profile (maybe) – just need to add some longer shifting cables or avoid tight turns!!! Also a nopinz custom team TCC skinsuit has come my way after much wriggling in the bathroom last night 😳 . Very nicely made and feels fast. Disc wheels are to be collected, possibly Friday.

One last club 10 tomorrow, but it’s GCSE day for teen2, so I may be elsewhere. Might look for a 25 later in the season. I can’t ride this year’s Surrey League four up TT on Sept 3rd, sadly, but this looks fun I’ve ridden the nine-up before. Could set a PB. Any takers for a team?

TiRed, if I was free that day I might well have been interested.

I appreciate people are still racing but i’d be interested to see others season round ups.

Well I PB’d every course I raced. 4 opens with a couple of podiums (could have been 3 if it wasn’t for a dropped chain!) Rode 9 local club races, mostly second and third places. Best 10 was a 21:19 on H10/1 and best 25 was 54:20 on H25/1. Didn’t beat my 10 PB from F11/10 last year but then I’ve not gone looking for fast courses. I’d have been happy with that last season, but TBH it’s disappointing this season. Nowhere near enough racing (illness, family commitments, poor planning.) I should have probably gone and ridden some fast courses early season and got in some bankers too.

Still got a couple of open events coming up, H10/17R this weekend, and first of the season on F11/10 next weekend. May do a couple of club events too. Though mentally I think I’m done (not really been up for it since I got knocked off training on the TT bike.)

Lessons will be learnt though and applied over the winter!

Mines well documented. Started TTing this year, road bike with clip ons. Progressed to save 2 minutes on Hillingdons TT circuit over the course of 7 events, posted a 23 on a club 10 in the Herts country side, and a 1:05 2 weeks ago in my first 25.

As for the 25m I mentioned early in this thread I couldn’t get the power out and ended up 30/36 against proper TT bikes. I then went on Holiday where the very next day a viral throat infection materialised, so that’s the cause of that then.

Looking forward to next year now I’ve got the basics (and some 50’s and a skinsuit 😀 ). I’ve really fallen for time trialling.

Well the evening TT series I’ve been doing this year (for the first time, in fact my first serious crack at TTing) finished last Tuesday but it wasn’t a TT but a HC weirdly, That I surprisingly managed to finished joint 3rd (I’m a good 5-6kgs heavier than I was when I did the Fred whitton) Anyway in the TT’s I finished 2nd overall and first vet. Tbh I’m over the moon with this and it’s made me take a v v tough decision. I’m selling my nomad to fund a proper 2nd hand TT bike 😥 I’ve been a mtb’er for nearly 20years (and always loved it ! ) but I’ve seemed to take to TT’s like a duck to water and I really want to give TTing a really good go next year but the only way I can fund it is by selling the bike I use the least so the nomads got to go. It’ll be an end of an era but it’s got to be done.
Anyway I did my first 25 this morning, two laps around a rolling course near to where I live. Due to it being my first one I was a bit unsure how to pace it but I think it worked out ok. My aim was to go under the 1hour mark but the conditions weren’t the best, thankfully no real wind to speak off but very damp, some of the corners were sketchy to say the least. so to come in at 56:51 I was very happy. A big part of going under the hour mark would go to the wheels I borrowed. Omg Zipp 808 tubes are lush ! Seemed to hold speed sooooo well ! Not to mention they make a lovely whooshing noise 😆
Don’t know weather my pm is reading low or my form is starting to drop off though, went round averaging 306w, although in April I did an 20min FTP test of 357w, giving me an FTP of 339 ? If it’s the latter I’m not to bothered, I’ve only got two more TT’s to do.
Anyway a few picks, first two one was taken on the hill climb (warning, make sure there’s no kids around, it’s quite scary 😯 )
Second one was my bike this morning with those beautiful Zipps on !

    Good pain face that 🙂

Was the FTP test done in TT position? Got similarish numbers here with about a 30W drop between road bike and TT bike.

FTP test was done in road bike position so could explain it. Really need to do another FTP test to see where I’m at atm. Struggling to get motivated to do one at this point in the season though 🙁

with backing off for corners ect ave power can drop off a bit. I can also put out more watts on the road bike than the TT mainly because I spend more time on it. No road races left so gunna stick some entries inbfor some TTs

Great effort andy and congratulations on a fantastic first season! I’ve very much enjoyed following and will look forward to seeing how you get on next year once you have committed fully. If you can transfer those numbers to the TT bike and get some hard training in over winter, then you should be able to ruffle more than a few feathers next year 🙂

I’ve only ridden 3 25s so far but my power has never been near what I can produce for a 10. I’m hoping that with practice the number will rise as it’s kind of annoying at the moment. Fortunately I can produce a respectable 10, so that makes up for it for the time being!

I seem to be possibly better at 25s although I don’t know how much of that is enjoying the intensity being backed off a notch! Only done two this year but managed to scrape a pb in the second on a pretty windy day.

Cheers Jamz ! Looking forward to it myself next year. I seemed to have raised a few eyebrows on my results on the local circuit this season on my modified roadbike. In fact I’ve been approached by a local team about the possibility of riding for them next year, both in TT’s and road/crit racing. Their won’t be any money involved (I’m not that good! ) but it’ll be good to glean as much info as possible of guys far more knowledgeable than me. Especially when it comes to the crit and road disciplines ’cause I haven’t got a Scooby Doo 😆

Think that’s why my power is down, re being in the TT position. There’s a lad I ride with had the same problem but by riding his TT bike as often as possible his body has got used to it. In fact he’s producing more on the TT bike. He averaged 392w at a 10mile TT the other week 😯

I don’t know many who aren’t down at least a few watts on the TT bike compared to the road bike. And ultimately what’s important is the clock, not how many watts you can put out, so trading off watts for better aero is often a compromise worth making.

Spending more time in position is definitely one way to go. Though that’s a tough as dark evening winter miles on the TT bike can be pretty dismal. And turbo time in position even more so. I had planned to do a lot more last winter but failed because it is so dismal.

Having said that I know some very good riders who spend very little training time in position, but then they race a LOT, especially early season, and have been doing it years so probably are already well adapted.

Especially when it comes to the crit and road disciplines ’cause I haven’t got a Scooby Doo

Nice one! Good luck with that, I reckon you’ll take to it like a duck to water. From my limited experience you just gotta get yourself to the front, but not on the front, and be ready. Also helps to know who the hitters are so you can keep an eye on them. I suppose if you’re in a team then they can help you with that sort of stuff.

On another note, does anyone have any tips for riding the E2/25 ??

I’m riding it for the first time this Saturday and I don’t wanna mess it up! I found the E2/10 took a few runs to get the knack of, but at least I will know that part of the 25 course. Any advice for the rest would be greatly appreciated.

Rode the Surrey league four up team time trial yesterday. We only had three riders and I wa the token tester. Punched a hole in the air for my team mates, and it was good to test the new position and skinsuit. Felt far too easy to be honest and I didn’t need a heart rate monitor to tell me this. Sadlymy poor team mates didn’t get a huge draft, but we finished mid field and third vets. Two minutes down on last year.

Might look for a few more to ride.
