Just looking at this as it could be a contender for my new frame. Then I noticed the Maxle swing arm £100 surcharge. Really? £100 more than a QR swing arm.

    Why?

Don't know why it's £100 extra, but in hindsight I should have gone for it when i bought my 09 five. Bike is awesome, and can't say I notice any flex in the back end, but you do get creaking with the rear QR unless it's very tight and you keep the dropouts greased. If you're spending that much anyway, I'd go for it.

    They've always had that surcharge.

    That's a fair point, but seriously a £100 seems a huge amount.

I'm all for Orange making a profit and accept that the Maxle dropouts are different and they won't sell as many, but still £100 just seems way over the top.

The maxle axle its self will cost a chunk of the upgrade, then there's the cost of machining the rear end. Makes sense that there would be an upgrade price.

If not I'd guess some people would only moan that the QR version wasn't cheaper. This way you can spec the bike how you want it and only pay for what you want.

The maxle rear ends really do make sense, QRs seem like something out of the Ark after you've used a maxle.

it is a different swing-arm with different machining.

R&D, design and tooling up all cost money.
they have to pay magura/ sram (who owns the patent now?) a license
you get the maxle – they cost considerably more than a QR
you get a 12mm through hub – these cost more than QR hubs.

when you buy a car let us know and we'll explain why things on the option list cost money too. 😉

In hindsight on my Five I would have gone for maxle – but the Pro II conversion kit haddn't been released 🙁

Rear Maxles have an SRP of £57.99, according to CRC. The other £42.01 presumably cover the other things mentioned – design, machining, having to stock and support manufacture of two different designs instead of just the QR version, etc.

Yes, but they already have bikes with Maxles, and presumably it's just the drop out that's machined differently, so they already have the tools

    No, they don't.

I'm not saying a surcharge is unreasonable, just that £100 is steep.

Some of it is process as well I think.

If you go for QR and a standard colour it's cheaper as they make these up in bulk ready to build up. I think Maxle and different colours are made to order so cost more.

I think its a bit steep but SRAM probably charge most of that in a liscence due to Orange mainly fitting Fox!!

I think £100 sounds a good figure for those of us without the maxle on our Fives and wanting to upgrade. I would do it.

I would say it was justfied cost Has its an upgrade with a direct
cost of a Maxle which costs around £ 8 quid trade price.
But all the other parts are hand made not produced by robots
