No such thing as a crap char. We all play differently. Also you can get the tusks from another location 😉 quite close to them. Makes it sense when you find them. No need to kill the wolly mammoths. Found the mob difficulty ideal so far to level 12 as a kitty cat sneak thief. I find the sneaking around and long shots with bow to suit my playing style. And I have learnt lock picking, pretty easy when you find out how.

560ti on ultra settings no issues.

Well my point with the crap char thing is more about if you level up using secondary skills (e.g. do a lot of smithing, enchanting, alchemy etc.) then you can end up gaining a few levels without raising combat skills and taken to extremes end up with a high level char that struggles when combat’s required.

There’s also stuff like I was specialising in fire and ice spells only to then read about lightning stuff being instant effect etc. so I’m now thinking perhaps I should start working on that and leave fire/ice alone for a bit. maybe it’s covered in the manual better but I just did a Steam d/l so don’t have anything more to go on than in-game tooltips really :p

Your not forced to level up in Elder Scrolls games. If for example you make a load of potions and you gain enough XP from it to level up, but your worried the next bandit you see will stab you up, don’t take the level up till you have gained more combat/defence skills.

I like sneaking around with poison on my blades and arrows, so my character reflects that. Killed a few giants and mammoths with poisoned arrows, fatigue and paralysis are particuarly good.

Hey? Why? Be what you want to be. Fire ice arcance whatever. Dont be forced in to playing a build just becasue its the ‘best’. Play the one you like.

Waiting for the kids to go to bed so Mrs Grips can fire up Skyrim.. it’s really a bit too violent for them to watch.

    Right – a question:

Mrs Grips would like to know how to quickly switch between a bow and a sword. We had a go at getting the favourites set up, but now the dpad hotkey just seems to flip between sword and nothing.

molgrips just show them the educational qualities of the game (all the wildlife) it will be like an interactive david attenburough documentary 😉 (nature in action as a huge dragon/giant/sabre tooth tiger e.t.c opens a big can of whupass on your character 😉

Favourite thing is either buggered or just shit it doesn’t work well at all. Quicker just to swap as action stops anyway.

When in the items menu, select something to favourite. Then in the favourites menu you can hotkey them. Thats for PC don’t know how it works for console.

unfortunately (on 360 anyways) you can only hotkey items with up/down d pad buttons) and you can only have on thing in each hand (either a weapon/spell or shield).it has taken me some time to get my head around it (as i come from the oblivion school of elder scrolls).it does get better though once you have played for a while 🙂

Right, thanks folks. There’s meant to be a way of setting your two most favourite things to left and right d-pad but the instruction manual is completely vague about it and experimenting has revealed some really bizarre behaviour.

    can i jump in please….

you seems all hard core people so be gentle…

Assasins creed annoyed me as i didnt have the patience (at the time)… i reeeeeeeeeeeally want to get an RPG type game but im guessing Skyrim is similar’ish to AC?

think ive answered my own question there!?

Skyrim is totally different to assassins creed. Assassins creed is more linear whereas skyrim you can literally do anything you want. It is a more hardcore rpg game.

My 12y.o son has expressed an interest in this and would like it for Christmas for his PS3. He has not played any of the Oblivion type games before and his main enjoyment is Cod. I think he has seen the ads on tele for it and thinks it looks good – but not sure if he has the right patience for a game like this.

Not being much of a gamer myself (I was playing proper D&D when a student and computer games were fighting mugwumps in text format).

So is this a good starting place? Is it good for short attention spans and is there a cheaper alternative for the complete newbie?

Skyrim carries an 18 certificate, does it not?

Age rating aside I’m not sure an open-world RPG like Skyrim is a good introduction to the genre. Although linear games (where you go through quests in a fairly rigid order and open up new game areas as you go along) can be frustrating they’re also easier to get into IMO. With something like Skyrim you’re kind of dumped in the middle of a new world with a couple of vague main quest lines you’re aware of from the introductory stuff but what you do and where you go is largely up to you. Whilst the freedom is refreshing you can end up feeling a bit lost and unsure what quests are worth pursuing (depending on your personal goals) and what you can skip etc.

I think it’s 15 in the UK, 18 in the rest of Europe.

EDIT: No, I tell a lie, it’s 18 BBFC rated too.

Not entirely sure why it’s 18 to be honest – at least so far. It’s got gushing blood when you fight, but that’s about it. Which is fairly pointless and unneccessary.

Skyrim is a BBFC 15 not 18. It’s due to the beheading which means it’s not allowed a standard PEGI rating. So no it’s not suitable for a 12 year old.

It has some mild gore, a couple of mild swear words and people have their heads cut off and throats cut. It’s up to you if you think this too much for your kid. My kids have seen me playing they’re 5 and 8 they know fine well it’s a game not real.

Pffft, when I were a 12 year old lass, I was merrily decapitating people in Moonstone on the Amiga. Kids today, bloody mollycoddled, the lot of them!

    I should clarify,

I wasn’t saying “ZOMG you can’t buy it, he’s too young,” that’s up to you. I was merely pointing it out as something you might want to take into account.

IIRC the Call of Duty series are all PEGI 18 too, so if you’re happy with him playing those… <shrug>

Heh, just joshing. I’m glad when people ask about game suitability and content for their kids so that they can make an informed choice, rather than buying little Timmy the latest GTA game then going all Daily Mail when they realise it’s all about car theft, drug running and prozzies.

I used to work in Game when I was at uni, and some parents thought the age rating was a mark of difficulty. I also remember one 8-year old lad (who was actually called Tim) who gave me a death stare because I informed his mother of the nature of GTA Vice City. He’d told her it was a racing game…

There’s a subtle difference, I think, between craftily playing games that might not be wholly suitable, and having your parents buy them for you. The latter makes it ‘acceptable.’ I don’t see as it’s a problem that a young teen plays violent computer games (hell, I played enough of them), more that perhaps a parent should be setting examples.

Not that I’m a parent or in any way qualified to comment, of course.

Easy to think something is suitable for kids because “it’s a game” or “it’s a cartoon.”

Would like to get this but can’t see me playing it for than a week or so. Fall Out 3, Mass Effect 2 and Witcher 2 each grabbed me for about that long before turning into the same old same old.

Sure SR looks super lovely, but isn’t that just glossing over yet another RPG full of incredibly dull NPCs, rinse-n-repeat side quests and an inventory list that forever requires tinkering with?

Level 16 at the moment, using 1 hand a shield which is quite fun. Spent yesterday evening making a full set of dwarven armour and mace, look cool as now!

Trying not to do the main story line too much, so just wandering round finding stuff and killing the dragons as they come. Got my arse handed to me after killing one dragon, some lich guy popped out of a coffin on top of a moubntian and nommed me.

Good fun though, until a giant kills your horse!
