  • 160mm ish travel XL sized 'Gnarrduro' bike, budget £2k – £2.5k

Idly musing about a possible forthcoming bike change.
    Budget is £2k to £2.5k
    27.5 wheels (deffo no 29ers)
Must be huge/XL sized but with lots of standover
Shimano gearing/braking if possible (not an Sram fan)
Must be Pikes – not flexy Fox 32’s
More towards a mini DH bike rather than XC.

Happy to go German/mail order so have been looking at Radon, Canyon & YT.

    Any recommendations?

Have you looked at the Rose Uncle Jimbo? 160F 165R 27.5

The way you can customize the thing is fab.

Bird Aeris for that money. The XL is massive, longest bike i’ve ridden.

Only thing is it’s 140mm or 150mm travel rear, not that i’ve ever felt like I’ve missed the xtra travel.

Can be built up into a mini DH type bike quite nicely.

Bird Aeris mentioned above can be easily changed to 150mm on the back (two shock settings) and the AM model has 160mm Pikes up front. I can confirm it’s very good 🙂

Completely forgot about Bird despite checking them out previously (I am jet lagged)
    It ticks all the boxes.

Thread closed unless anyone has an XL to post piccy’s of?

New Whyte G-160 announced last week (albeit very quietly)…

Increased ETT lengths by about 25mm (the large is now effectively an XL), Pikes, SRAM X1 and Guide brakes though which may put you off, though in my experience there’s enough ready customers out there for SRAM stuff now that you could buy the bike, sell the SRAM and fit Shimano and be quids in and with a smile on your face…

If you need an XL, you’ll need to ignore the ‘look’ (of anything).

FWIW most glossy pics of bikes are of the smaller sizes, as they look ‘better’ – same as shoes and many other things.

You may, or may not, have read the stuff on the Bird website re the Aeris sizing. It says they have kept the frame dimensions which are relevant to the shock mount the same on every size, just increasing the seat tube and brace as necessary. Whether or not this makes the bigger sizes look odd or wrong I don’t know.

I’ve only recently retired my 2004 Enduro, whilst it wasnt the best climber, it was a VERY capable bike.
I have no doubts that Ton’s one is the same.

Ton, which model/year is your XL spec enduro 29er pls?
If you’ve fallen out of love, I might just be interested. (29er curious)

Blimey, I know XL bikes don’t every win a beauty award, but that Process looks pretty ‘special’ as a XL – but that Bird thing – well, at least you could use it at the end of your drive if you don’t like it 😐

If your anywhere near Glos/FOD area you can sling a leg over it, if you want a demo Rose have a very helpful UK rep. PS ^ came in under £2k with 36’s and float x

or that process is just S3X

Latest Orange Five is not a million miles off that price. Think they have a deal on Pike upgrades right now, too.
