I’m looking for a new Passat to replace my 2.0 TDi which was written off. There’s a few 1.6’s around – are these still OK with a fully loaded car or does it get a bit sluggish?

A friends got a 1.6 diesel Golf estate and that seems OK.

Fine for pottering around town in, but not the best loaded up and trying to keep up with the french motorway traffic. It shows just what a good engine the 2.0TDI is.

The 1.6 was fine in the golf, didn’t see the need for the 2.0. However the Passat estate I then got adds 400kg or something daft and it blunted performance. Fine most of the time just about but you really had to time the overtakes perfectly. Forget the official 60 plus mpg too. I’d go for the 2.0
