    currently run 12-25 with a tiagra rear mech on a 34-50 chainset

    tempted by the 12-36 cassette to use the bike for more offroad and touring. what rear mech will i need will a med cage road one work or do i nede along cage mtb one

    work out the total difference in the setup then check the capacity of the rear mech as gievn my shimano and sram tech docs

    No way will a road rear mech work – they top out about 27T max rear cog. You need a Shimano Shadow rear mech (apparently – haven't tried this myself). It's the max cog size that will limit you, not the cage length. HTH.

    You'll need a med or long cage mtb mech, I doubt any road mech will take a 36t sprocket.
