Am I correct in thinking that the SRAM 11 speed cassettes need a new/different freehub body and therefore do not fit on to today’s, (yesterday’s?), ones?

What about Shimano’s new range of 11-40 1*11 gearing, is it the same here?

SRAM mtb cassettes fit on the XD Freehub – available for most hubs as a retro fit

Shimano MTB 11 – will be able to run on your standard free hub

Is the shimano road 11 different spacing from the shimano mtb 11 then?

shimano 11 speed road required a new free hub, apart from Mavics i think

Yep, because the 40t on the MTB ones is so large it can be offset from the freehub body, effectively taking up the space left by the angle of the spokes. The road ones are wider because you can’t do that with a 23t sprocket.

Is that due to the width of the cassette or so the larger sprocket clears the spokes?

What do you mean? It’s basically the same thing. The road cassettes require a longer freehub body, and the whole cassette is shifted outward from the centre line of the hub by 2mm or so. The MTB ones are pushed in toward the centre line, by offsetting the largest sprocket. The overall width is the same (or could be, I don’t know if it actually is).

So the spacing is the same but the mtb one has a concave back. That makes sense.

I’m assuming, it would make sense it’s the same, but it could be different.

    True, that’s why I asked. 😆

While you’re all here, are new Pro2 Evo’s discs compatible with 11 speed road?
