  • £1000 to spend on a womens hard tail…

Hello everyone, I'm looking to get my girlfriend a new bike ! So far we've narrowed it down to a Trek 8000 wsd or the Cube Access SL.

With sale prices it looks like the Trek is about £200 more. I like the cube, the Trek does't seem to have a much better spec for the price difference but my girlfriend likes the look of the Trek better!!!

Is there any other's we should consider around the £1000 mark?

    Thanks

    Leigh

If she likes it, she'll ride it more so it'll work out cheaper per ride and you'll both be happy.

Best to ride before you buy, would she buy shoes, bra or anything else without trying on? Not like normal shopping, once bought unable to return(normally)
Historically Treks can be a bit ridgid at the rear and nervous. Son has an old 8000 and it is brill but beats you up a bit on long rides.

    Cubes look good.

What about Meridas? Might even get a carbon?

Having tried a Commencal I would not reccomend that.

Genesis Core or Alptitude? scotabroad raves about his Core.

Raleigh actually have some nice bikes out atm with carbon rear stays.
    Carratec?
    Specialised
    Orange?
    Boardman

    soooooo many.

What does your lbs or nearest bike shop/s sell?

Might be an idea to go to a trail centre with hire bikes if you cannot get a "proper" test ride. Some town/city shops are not keen on allowing bikes further than they can see them ie down the street!!!

18bikes ( or other) might be able to build you up a Blue Pig for that money????
    I love mine…………………..

They both look like good choices to me, so don't think you can go too far wrong. Personally I'd be tempted to go for the Cube and spend the excess £200 on some nice upgrades (light wheelset?!) or some decent riding kit.

However, they look quite different geometry wise so it'd be worth at least having a sit on them and seeing what the reach is like. Trek's tend to be a bit longer so may be better if she's got longer arms or is a more confident rider and the Cube the reverse – but I'm only saying that from how they look on paper as I've never ridden a Cube.

Don't know if that helps at all, but I would recommend nice light wheels for us girlies and it's good to see that both bikes come with a decent fork. 🙂

My girlfriend asked me to to suggest some bikes she could buy. Same sort of budget. I sent her quite a few options and I think I was fairly objective with my assessment of their various merits and drawbacks.

She was very taken with the new Orange Clockwork, and even though I'd pointed out it wasn't the bast value for money, she still wanted it, still loves it now, likes the fact that it's a conversation starter on the trails, and I think liking her bike helps her like mountain biking.

And having ridden it myself, I try not to ride it too often. it's heavier, stiffer and more upright than mine, and harder work on the flat and up hills, but feels so much more fun on the way down that I get a bit miffed about mine!

I guess what I'm trying to say is give her a load of options including some you might not go for yourself, give your take on them as objectively as you can, which she'll value, and get the one she likes the most.

So basically, what BigJohn said, but with way more words!

Wise words nedrapier, thinking about it, that's what my hubby did when it came to buying my first proper mtb – I ended up with an 853 Rock Lobster and it definitely got me excited about riding! (And despite having changed bikes many times since then (I actually didn't love the RL for very long) the effect still hasn't worn off!)

Hey everyone thanks for all the input! I have never heard of some of the options… I'll take a deeper look in to it.

Thanks again, you've all been very helpfull!

I have the Cube Access SL and it is awesome! it feels like (well compared to my Giant Reign 2 it does) it handles really well, it is an awesome bike to ride. I could harp on for ever about how much I love my Cube, especially the black and white funky colours but I'd bore you all to death! I'd go for a Cube over a Trek!

When my mate needed a bike like this (1K girl's bike) I pushed her toward the Cube and it is a staggeringly good bike. Better than the trek.

    (Mr MC posting)

I bought MC the cube for her 30th. It is well designed for a women-specific bike (unlike some which are just painted baby blue…) with frame geometry, component choice etc all adapted for womens body shape. MC rides it far more than the £1600 full susser she bought herself (and took it to Colorado over the FS too).

The only changes we've made are saddle (personal preference) and I built her a lighter wheelset as the original hubs are quite heavy, and the inclusion of an XT cassette knocked a good couple of pounds off.

She routinely gets compliments from other riders met on the trails, I think the cosmetics are very simple, classy and attractive.

Just taken a closer look at the Cube and realised it's the alloy version of the carbon one I was looking at a while ago. I couldn't stretch the finances to teh carbon in the end, but it looks like an ace bike in terms of design and value (and if they did a frame only I'd have snapped it up). Plus I'd do as Mr and Mrs. MC did and spend that left over cash on a lighter wheelset and cassette (you could probably pick up a set of Hope Hoops with Stans 355 rims off here secondhand for within your budget).

Ive just had a similar situation went into the shop to order a Cube Access wls pro and while waiting to speak to the manager she had a go on the Cube xms full sus in a small mens size and fell in love with it!

5 minutes later we had bought it and she's had 2 rides up at Cannock this week and she cant stop grinning.

Her view is that the bounce both end makes her more confident so I wouldnt rule a fs out if she hasnt tried one.

I have a Cube and I love it – however, it's the bloke's version as the women's was too small for me. OH also had a Cube HT which she loved until it got nicked – again it was the bloke's version as the women's didn't feel right. Both are/were the 16" frame but very differently set up as we're quite different heights and I've got much longer legs. Great spec and ride really well (for us)

I suppose all this waffle is really just to second the proposal that sitting/playing on/riding is the really important part of the buying process. Dunno where you are based by the Cyclewise guys at Whinlatter were great when we got ours and really helped us through the process of understanding what we wanted.

However, whatever she gets, also second the idea that she really enjoys riding it.
