On a different note, is it possible to square infinity?

    [geek]Yes the answer is infinity.

How many number between 1 and infinity – infinity
How many square nubers between 1 and infinity – must be less surely as there are less square numbers than normal numbers? Nope still infinity[/geek]

    ∞ + ∞ = ∞
    ∞ – ∞ = ∞
    ∞ x ∞ = ∞
    ∞ / ∞ = ∞

    0 + 0 = 0
    0 – 0 = 0
    0 x 0 = 0
    0 / 0 = ∞

    Therefore ∞ = 0

    Nobel Prize please.

Surely the size of the universal is infinity cubed since it goes on for infinity along each axis.

    volume = width * height * depth

Isn’t that assuming the universe is a cube?

I reckon it’s the shape of a Nice ‘n’ Spicey Nik Nak, or possibly a Wotsit

Won’t the curvature of spacetime mess up your distance/volume calculation?

How many number between 1 and infinity – infinity

    No.

    It’s a nonsensical question.

You might as well ask how many numbers are there between 1 and more.

It’s meaningless. Infinity is a concept, not a real number. So you cannot do arithmetic with it. There are an infinite number of real numbers, but that does not mean that there is a real number called infinity. Obviously.

And the something you are made from is mainly stardust.

I think you’ll find Ariel Universe Ultimate is whiter than white and gives far more colorful colours and better shades of grey.

    I respectfully disagree

Infinity isn’t merely a concept its essential mathmatically in calculus and set theory.

I didn’t say it wasn’t an essential concept.

But it’s not a real number. You can’t count to it. So trying to put it in arithmetic statements is nonsense.

the ‘concept’ of infinity falls down when you use it in basic arithmetic and algebra and you end up creating paradoxes.
yes, it has its place in calculus and other branches of more complex theoretical mathematics, but not arithmetic.

I remember a variation of the infant school playground “my dad’s bigger than your dad” whereby as five year olds we didn’t realise that falsely claiming that your dad was the oldest (iirc I said my dad was 99 years old 😆 ) did not necessarily make him more likely to duff up everyone else’s dads….

    ? + ? = ?
    ? – ? = ?
    ? x ? = ?
    ? / ? = ?

    0 + 0 = 0
    0 – 0 = 0
    0 x 0 = 0
    0 / 0 = ?

    Therefore ? = 0

There was a nice bit on the radio years ago about a guy trying to explain infinity to his young son:

Dad: Son, what do you think the largest number anyone could possibly count to, a number so big nobody could count any higher

Boy: errr, Eight million, three thousand and sixty three

Dad: ahh but, what if i add one more to that, making Eight million, three thousand and sixty four

    Boy: Well…. I was close.
