My night ride involves a pint at half way and 3x at the end, one mile from home off road. 3 or 4 times a week.

Why else would you go for ride in the middle of the night?
That'd be just weird.

Did Callendar to aberfoyle recently with a pub stop at the halfway point(aberfoyle). 4 pints turned me into a downhill maniac on the ride back through queen elizabeth forest park! Might try it for sundays uplift!

Jeez you lot, I think if I drank every ride I'd feel like a bit of an Alchy TBH...

Last time I had a pint it was a couple of weeks ago; 1 pint on the return leg of a 40 mile loop ~2.5 miles from home, with some chips...

I did notice less cramp after but by the 10mile/Pint logic I should have had 4, Nah the rest of the day would have been a write off....

Nope. My body is the proverbial temple when it comes to post-exercise alcohol. Easy to avoid the stuff when on my own, but usually different with mates.

Actually there was some study recently what showed that drinking beer post-exercise actually aids faster recovery.

I find that if I have a pint or two after a long ride, I suffer far less from cramp. Seems to work very well indeed.

I work on ten miles a pint

Every time I go for a good rip on the bike, I always get a inexplicable craving for beer on the way home. This usually ends with me drinking twice what I have just burned off, and is somewhat blunting my efforts to get fitter by cycling more!

Don't have this problem when I play other sports, just mtbing? Anyone else aware of this phenomenon?

...We had two world championships before deciding it was too dangerous to share with most folk...

We ran a couple in Oz. Loads of blood, people doing jumps whose wheels had never left the ground before etc.

Came to the conclusion it was a brilliant way to train able-bodied people for the Paralympics.

If anyone wants the orientbeering website, I'm happy to transfer it.

I invented that around 10 years ago:
Checkpints with beers: crap lager in the valleys and quality ale on the hills.
Extra points for bleeding and getting lost
Points deducted per cog
We had two world championships before deciding it was too dangerous to share with most folk.

This is kindergarten stuff.

You're supposed to drink a can at each checkpoint in Orientbeering (and have several checkpoints).

In addition to the “official” XC, Downhill and Trials parts of the Weekender competing we’re going to be doing some additional “just for fun” optional mini-events to keep people entertained during the latter stages of Saturday.

The first of these mini-events will be the Polaris OrientBeering Challenge. Basically, it will involve navigating your way from Lee Quarry over to the not-that-far-away Cragg Quarry.

Once you’ve found Cragg Quarry you’ll have to locate a orienteering punch, punch some holes into your raceplate with it, return to Lee Quarry alive and go to the Polaris stand to collect your delicious liquid prize.

Either way, unfortunately the difference is absolutely tiny (unless you are actually ascending vertical walls for kilometres on end); if you do a 30km loop with an even 1km climb / 1km descent you've only gone an extra 67m in total.

Most GPSs will tell you your rate of altitude gain/loss. Not sure if that's of any use to you...

That statistic was quite interesting when I had my GPS running for take-off and landing in a jetliner. (The plane didn't crash, BTW, despite their warnings to turn electronic stuff off.)

If I go up a big hill does my GPS give a distance based on the horizontal distance between the top and bottom or does it calculate it on altitude too?

Taking it to an extreme if I climbed a vertical wall 1 mile high will the GPS tell me I've travelled 1 mile or 0 miles.

What I'm getting at is; am I actually faster up hills than my GPS is telling me, in which case I'm fitter than I think and don't need to feel bad about drinking lots of beer tonight?

OK, so, Mrs Geordie's sister's fella (still with me?) is visiting in a couple of weeks time, and he has some bizarre affection for Alloa Athletic aka the Wasps. We're planning to take in a match, so I've been trying to locate a decent real ale pub in the town to celebrate/drown our sorrows in. I've tried both The Good Pub Guide and The Good Beer Guide with no luck. With the likes of such brewing genius' as The William Bros in town, I would've expected there to be at least one decent watering hole.

Can you anyone sling any suggestions my way?
Cheers,

Use a bottling stick, life's been so much easier since I got one.

I'd also recommend an immersion heater more so than a brew belt, it'll regulate the temperature better unless you happen to have a belt with a thermostat. Only a few quid more, there's dedicated homebrew ones (Electrim 75) available for about £20 off Ebay or try an aquarium one.

Not an essential, but keeping your yeast happy will help you get down to final gravity. 18c is about right, if you've got a room constantly around this temperature then you'll probably be fine without.

As mentioned above, you don't have to use a hydrometer. If you can be sure fermentation has started (and it's fairly obvious) then 2 weeks in the bucket should see it creep as close to final gravity as it's likely to get.

Although they are useful for identifying a stuck fermentation and general beer geekery if you end up getting more involved.
