Pretty bad reporting if it was the youths track meet.
Youths are what, age 14 and under? hardly men and not mentioning it was on a track.
Daily Mailists must have had an extra round of toast after reading that.

A bit like describing a boxing match as a fight breaking out in Wembley.

We've all come off at speed at some point or other. The only difference is the speed differential on the road. You can still hurt yourself coming off an Alp these days don't forget. A mate of mine last year punctured a lung when he hit a tree whilst hacking down a deep decent into/out of some trees near Les Arc.
I been shot down the road many times, racing or out training..

Part of the deal IMO and nothing to get too worried about.

And text that went with the image

The Art of Descending
So you think climbing is hard? Wait 'til you come down. It is intimidating to come down a hill on a pair of tires that are no more than an inch wide, but once you get the hang of it, descending is one of the most enjoyable parts of riding. Here are some good (and stylish) positions to get into while descending (especially for photo opportunities):

Ehh? Why would they be doing that? Sounds like a sure way to kill yourself!
Seriously, why do that? What's it do? Where will they have seen it on tv?

Edit: sit in the crossbar I mean

they will have seen pro's doing it on 30 minute alpine descents - so they think they'll do it, in the bunch, on a 0.5 mile descent before they then get spat out theback.

I wouldnt belive it goes on if hadn't seen it. Hands nowhere near brakes - amazing.

They say that up there and to be fair Salt Ayre is fairly safe when its dry - albeit some of the Biketreks youngsters seem to think they are invincible.

Riding with your hands over bars isnt an issue if you are in a break but its pointless anyway and not convinced chippers go any faster doing that (other than thinking they are King Fabu).

Biggest issue at crits is people coming up the inside at speed with no shout when people are slowing for corners then T boning someone or locking up.

Some bell end was descending in the bunch holding onto his bars next to the stem and sat on top tube - a f'kin 4th cat - thats how you bring down 20 riders in a bunch- watching too much telly.

The Commissaire at Salt Ayre (Lancaster) said that if he saw anyone doing that in a breakaway or resting their wrists on the tops of the bars pro style they'd be DQ'd immediately. That's what you need, some good strict officiating to stop the cocks who think they can sprint like Cav. Soon hammers the message home.

Preston = carbon graveyard

Too many juniors (scab pickers) with skinsuits that have been repaired a million times. They think nothing of using the grass at Preston - especially on approach to finish.

One reason to ride at front is to avoid crashes.

Rode at Bridlington last week and the riding was shocking- and if you say anything to anyone they turn into 'ten fighting tigers'. Take the advice, ride in a straight line.

Some bell end was descending in the bunch holding onto his bars next to the stem and sat on top tube - a f'kin 4th cat - thats how you bring down 20 riders in a bunch- watching too much telly.

The air ambulance had to attend a big pile up at the Darley Moor closed circuit on Saturday as well.

Road cycling is far more dangerous than mountain biking, would much rather crash my mountain bike than my road bike!

Road crashes can be horrific. Doesn't matter if you're the best rider in a race if some muppet in front cuts across, it can bring down 20 people in the blink of an eye. I narrowly avoided a crash in a crit race at Preston last week - touch of wheels on a damp circuit brought down 4 people one of whom wrecked his frame.
