p.s. if anyone's thinking about resoling their boots/shoes with 5.10 stealth rubber, this is one of the best places=http://www.feetfirst.resoles.co.uk/ I've had a pair of SPD shoes resoled with 5.10 dotty soles there and the service and quality of work was top notch.

Just a suggestion re: the AM41's (this is from someone who has previously owned/owns Vans/5.10s/AM40's etc). Personally, I like 'em, and they're reasonably water resistant. However, I don't find 'em as warm as 5.10s, or even my old AM41's. I think the problem is that the midsole is a bit thinner than the other shoes.

Couple of top tips if you want to improve their cold weather performance on the cheap - pop some insulated insoles in, and if you want to stop water getting in thru the perforated areas, rub a bit of clear boot wax/dubbin in to fill the perforations in. If you try the latter, it needs to occasionally be reapplied, but it works a treat.

HTH

Hey It's the OP here! Nice to see the resurrection, I've still to use my AM41's as my wrist is still not up to full strength since breaking it before Xmas, good to hear they'll keep my feet pretty dry when I do venture out!

Cheap karrimor hicking shoes for me £20 for waterproof version from sportsdirect half decent grip on flats ,and good when i'm pushing the soddin bike up a sloppy muddy slope when my lungs give out,and for £20 they are ideal for a tight arsed yorkshire man like mi-sen .

I generally use the 5-10 lows and have even paired them with some overshoes...needed really big ones from Decathlon. But it's not ideal and they absorb a ridiculous amount of water. However I use flats for all my riding and have been trying to decide on a suitable shoe that's lightweight and dries quickly for road and general use.

Has anyone got any experience of riding in something like the 5-10 Freerunners or Warhawks?

Just thought I'd revisit this after today's ride:

The shimano AM41's are perforated leather for breathing. How can these be any good for keeping water out?

Well they did a pretty decent job of keeping my feet dry in today's wet slushy snow. I'm sure they're not waterproof if wading through puddles, but then it would just come over the top anyway. Was impressed - they did far better than I expected.

No doctordee, we went in the first week of April last year, thought we'd be fine booking snowsure Les Arcs! It was a bad season last year, so snow cover was thin, but even we weren't expecting to ski in 20C+! It was fine once we got high, but there was no snow down to Arcs 1600, one narrow strip to ski down to 1800, and only one run open down to the Vanoise Express. Of course you'll not have any of these problems this season!! I skied down from the Aiguille Rouge (3000m+) in a t-shirt, there were girls from SCUM (Ski club of University of Manchester) who were very kindly skiing in bikini tops!

Yves as a chalet is ok. It's far from luxury in any way, but yes I think you could say comfortable. Rooms are manageable, but nothing special. You can sit in the sitting room area no problem, and there's an open fire. The walk into the village is about 5-10 mins (a bit further to the lifts), this is what put us off. It's an ok walk for a night out in normal clothes. The problem was the walk in ski boots, carrying all the gear to the lift, especially when you have moaning children in tow, and have to carry their gear! There might be a shortcut when there's more snow, but we couldn't work out where it would be (and obviously couldn't use it with our lack of snow). There was no ski bus. If you are a group of young-ish lads you'll possibly not find the walk too much hassle, but for us it was. I know what you mean about cheap, we did get a hell of a good deal - but in hindsight we know why.

Our chalet host was a bit of a tosser too and he didn't keep the place very clean, but I wouldn't put anyone off the place because of that, as no doubt he's been replaced.

I'll have a look to see if I have any photos from the inside and e-mail them to you if you like?

Had my ski's serviced at Jon's Ski Tuning in Nottingham. What a difference. Last year they were on the "factory" wax, and the bases were white at the end. This year they were brilliant, accelerating and gliding on piste.

The one thing I did learn though was:

Moving the bindings 4 stops forward makes the ski easier to turn, but it will also launch you out of the front in the soft stuff.
I learned this a lot, generally several times daily.

Next trip if it's still powdery I'll move them 4 stops back from the starting point. (which is what was actually recommended!)

Looks like we'll postpone the trip in a week's time and go at the beginning of April instead now.

I'd actively put you off Chalet Yves in Arcs 1800 though, granted there were only 2 lifts open, but we had a hell of a trek every morning at 20C + to get to the slopes.

You are talking summer, yeah? We've booked Yves for snowboarding in March, because my pals wanted somewhere cheap - and it is. But what's the actual chalet like? There are almost no pictures of the inside on-line, except for one shonky looking chair. Is it comfortable, or should we plan to be going out most of the time?

True, I do live in the East Midlands where we don't have proper hills. Last time I went to cannock (I know, still not that hilly but its about the most climbing I'll do on a mtb usually) on my ss I found 32-16 was ok but too easy on certain bits. I'd do the climbs a lot easier now as I was quite unfit back then. 34-16 is a good compromise, think it's the 26" equivalent to the magic ratio of 44-16 on a bmx

Had a meeting with the playing fields committee on Thursday night, they are being very supportive and are keen to go ahead with a pump track, however they are looking for 100% funding from grants to finance the build, I'm not sure how to go about it?
My first thought is to get some quotes so I know roughly what it will cost then start to approach Sport England and the lottery commission for funding, is this how others progressed?
Any help? please?

aye, i'm sure they'd not be heavily rockered. my 'all round' skis would benefit from more rocker off piste, but are better on piste without. the imagine on their page suggests not a ridiculous rocker

lever on top switches them between a rocker and a regular profile, so they work well on both piste and off-piste...

Not sure how much rocker there is on those as I haven't seen them, but it's generally considered that ski's with extreme rocker are terrible on piste and just spin around like a top with only part of the ski making contact with the snow. You can forget about nice long carved turns with lots of rocker on piste. They would be good in bumps when you need to rotate the skis fast I imagine.
Also not sure of the construction, generally powder skiis chatter a lot when going fast down a cat track or on piste. You'll see the front foot of the ski bouncing around like a mad thing. Piste skis have dampening properties so the chatter isn't as bad going through crud and death cookies.

Good idea to bale to swith from rocker to normol profile, me thinks it'll be a gimmick that will pass over though. I'd rather just have two pairs of skis, just like my two bikes .

That's it. That's the compromise. Nail. On. Head.
The compromise that nobody seems to understand, or just ignores when I make the point.

No need to get smart-arsey about it. I bought Pro2 based on cost vs weight, and the bearings have lasted 5 years and are still going. I can't see that as anything other than a successful purchase.

Re drag - as I understand it, all cartridge bearing hubs drag more than cup and cone, which is why Shimano use cup and cone, and they are apparently popular with XC racers for that reason. My XTR do spin for much longer than my Hope although I'm sceptical that this would make any difference on an XC race. My Saris Powertap road wheelset also spins extremely well and that's cartridge bearing, so go figure

I have also heard people say the XC Hope hub is not as stiff in the fork with standard dropouts. I have noticed that a bit to be honest. The Pro uses thicker axles even with the adapters for QR so I guess the axles will snap less on them. As for the drag I have had maybe 8 sets of Hope XC wheel builds over the years and I did notice they don't roll/spin as good as some hubs I have had. There the best hubs I have owned though without a doubt. I also liked the Mavic crosride wheels. Found that model Mavic hubs pretty good.

I have a nice st of Hope XC hubs in blue on some 717 disc rims if anyone is interested email me.

I would be keeping these but I fancy something a little wider on the rim side. So time to go for a new set.

The lower end (Onyx 370) DT hubs have two cartridge bearings and a roller needle bearing in the freehub and two standard pawls

You are correct. I also have an Onyx (I got that cheap too....) and it's a bit sparse on bearings inside. Makes a lovely commute/tour hub though and it's a piece of cake to service.
Otherwise, yes, I see your point.

The only problem I had with the DT 240 hubs was that you need a special tool to get the other part of star drive ratchet out of the hub body in order to remove and install the drive side hub bearing. That tool looks like a cassette lock ring tool but instead of costing a fiver cost 50 quid! Which is a total rip off.

Agreed. That's why I wouldn't pay top whack for one, but apparently the bearing behind that ratchet ring lasts nearly forever. For £70 for the pair of hubs, I'll give 'em a shot. Can't be worse than Pro 2s.

I like Hope XC hubs they have never gave me any problems at all. The only thing I don't like about them is there heavy and also have a lot of drag.

Drag? Never noticed that. Mine are lovely. I've snapped 2 axles on a 3rd XC I no longer own, the 2 I have now are perfect and have had a right thrashing. Odd, I can't really explain that. The weight is the steel freehub body, which I prefer TBH.

Pro2 ......... compromise on having smaller bearings, in order for them to fit 20mm and 15mm front axles and bolt through rears etc.

That's it. That's the compromise. Nail. On. Head.
The compromise that nobody seems to understand, or just ignores when I make the point.
P2 has five bearings of 3 different sizes. XC has 4, all the same size.
The compromise is in the aid of adaptability (And cheapness/ease of manufacture) the pay off is longevity.

XC bearing on the left. Pro 2 on the right. Which is going to last longer, hmmm?

Peter P I think The other person was on about DT Onyx and the 370 hubs which works in a totally different way to the 240 and 340 which use the star drive way of freehub engagement patented by Hugi back in the day. Which DT bought them out and use on there top end hub,

The lower end (Onyx 370) DT hubs have two cartridge bearings and a roller needle bearing in the freehub and two standard pawls.

The only problem I had with the DT 240 hubs was that you need a special tool to get the other part of star drive ratchet out of the hub body in order to remove and install the drive side hub bearing.
Pro2 are ok but if you run standard quick release like me, then you are having to compromise on having smaller bearings, in order for them to fit 20mm and 15mm front axles and bolt through rears etc.

I'm thinking about going over to some Shimano XT hubs the new M785 ones with the alloy axle. But the last set of those I had lasted a few road rides and the freehub seized up. I was loaded up with a light pannier bag aroud 15 KG though. I was hoping they had improved them as that was over two years ago when they first came out. Anyone else used them?

I might even try using the DMR revolvers on the new wheel build. I had those a few years back on a 29er and even single speeded them and they were good.

Hi ton,

Whoops, I think my prickly side got the better of me there......

If you read my original post you will see that this all started off as a tyre-swap that rapidly spiralled into a semi hub service. Only a numpty like me could have ridden last Saturday thinking "what's that funny tinkling noise coming from the rear wheel every so often?"

I think I deserved all of this - but the simplicity of the hub rescued a situation that could have lead to meltdown.

It was one of those series of 'discoveries' that meant a whole evening degreasing, cleaning, swearing and generally getting the kitchen oily.

I'm glad to hear other people regard themselves as numpties when it comes to bike servicing - I always get a little bit of fear whenever I approach my beloved bike with any kind of spanner or implement.

with the rocker on it lifts the tips, and yeah, good for short turns on piste. with the rocker off it makes for good carving with a longer edge in the snow

(i should have thought about the order in which i wrote the rocker/non-rocker and piste/off-piste!)

Top technology, easy handling

Two possible settings are what make Hybrid technology stand out.

Rocker on: position 1 gives you all the benefits of a rocker ski. Perfect skiing off-piste, great performance in short turns on-piste.
Rocker off: with the 0 position you simply switch off the rocker function to leave you with a true piste monster under your feet. Ideal for long, aggressive turns on the slopes.

DT swiss only parts in the hub are really quite expensive, and whilst not overly fiddly are harder for the DIY mechanic to work on. I won't use them on that basis.

Well, I know you need a tool to get one of the centre bearings out, but apparently that's rarely needed. Otherwise, being a competent DIY mechanic, I can see very little difference between Hope and DT in terms of ease of servicing

Interestingly, you are the first person I've seen saying that about DT hubs. And I did a fair amount of research before I bought mine (one free with fork, the other used for £70 admittedly)
The sealing is only as good as the seals on the bearings, surely? And all cartride hubs are the same in that respect.
