As has been said, most of the good old stuff has been included in the 8, or flattened, there is a bit of cheeky trail over the road at the top of the forest. As you climb in to the top of 'Home baked' carry straight on rather than turning right into the woods, turn left when you get to a path, this takes you to the road, over the road and follow your nose downhill. This will bring you to the car park by the res, then take the road for a short while and turn left back on to the 8.

Something a bit like this

Some of the best bits have been lost to tree felling. There were some great sections in the trees on either side of the red route where it bypasses Hully Gully. This were part of an old NAMBS downhill course used in the mid to late nineties. There were some other great bits of singletrack in the trees just after this on the other side of the fireroad around the remains of Fairhill Farm. Again, this was used by NAMBS, but for the XC race. We had actually taped out this bit as we thought that Martin was going to use it as part of the red route (the 8), but unfortunately it got obliterated by the loggers. Maybe it will get used when they extend the current red route.

Anyone else remember these bits??

The best bits of the old route have been included afaic, there weren't many of them. It's possible that there were some other little sections of note from the old days, but I never found them.

Most of the interesting bits used to be off the fire road between Tennel Hill and Geldard Laithe(names off the os map). However I'd rather do a couple of loops of the most recently built jumpy bit as the old stuff was mostly crap, other than the more free ridey bit if you enjoy that sort of stuff.

You can copy anything you've downloaded with iTunes onto the phone (DRM permitting). Also, from anywhere else for that matter.

I'm not aware of anything on the handset itself, but then, I've never had need to. What digital media I own is on the PC, I just dump across what I want to listen to.

Same as mos and frogstomp. Bought the DVD for my shonky N95, then, when the iPhone app appeared I bought that and loaded half the UK onto the phone, from just north of Birmingham down, plus selected area of 1:25k. I also have UK Map, which is very good, it allows you to download free 1:25k and 1:10k OS maps, but there's no ability to log routes. Very useful though. I've got 11.2Gb of apps on my phone, and a very large chunk of that is maps, with CoPilot added on. Wouldn't be without it, it's fantastic. I'd like the old panorama view added sometime, though.

Mobile Atlas Creator (version 1.8 i think) allows you to create your own os maps for free by downloading tiles from multimap.

Not sure if it'll make viewranger maps though, I'll check when I get home. I use Alpine quest on android and regularly use the is maps I've created.

Yup.. similarly to mos I've been using it regularly with the same OS maps since Nokia days..

I guess it's ultimate usability probably depends on whether you are prepared to pay for OS maps.. although it does support a number of 'over the air' open source maps...

Well worth it. I've had the actual map for about 4-5 yrs nearly since it came out. It's been on nokias & now on my iPhone just by updating the software. You Can just buy the tiles you want so you can customise your maps to suit the areas that you regularly ride in. I've got a 1:25000 one that stretches from Calderdale to the peaks.

The original has lasted two years of year round muddy riding but has been causing chainsuck for 12 months (yes in fact it only lasted 12 months :P).
I know that the steel ones are more durable but heavier (no real big issue re the extra weight so long as performance is same) but are any of the other manufacturers compatible alu offerings worth buying or is it just best to stick with the big S?
Opinions and choice/slections oh wise ones.....

I don't understand why anyone would pay for Bose headphones when you can get an awesome set of Grado SR80s for usually a much lower price. Unless you must have the sound isolation and stuff, Grados are all open back iirc.

I've got the OE headphones. 120 quid, so not cheap, but I love them, very comfy, great sound (not neutral at all through, very warm and quite bass heavy). I love them

If BOSE stuff was cheap they could hardly claim it was good, could they? It's all marketing.

I wanted some cheap but half decent ear plugs and went for some SoundMagic PL21s (I think). Very impressive especially for the money. They're a bit dull and could do with a bit more high end but apart from that the rest sounds very nice and clear. Solid bass without being muddy and you can actually hear all the instruments and subtleties in the mix. For £22 they're spot on. Oh and they were fine on the plane.

Another here who uses in-ear phones for flights and noise reduction. Even the non-active noise-cancellation kind are fine; if you get the fit right you cut out most of the noise of engines etc. Personally I was a Shure fan, but they kept breaking (E3, E4, SLC4 x2), so I switched to Etymotic hf5s. They're not quite the same sound, but incredibly detailed and recently the bass seems to have opened up a lot too.

I have had some Tri-Port over ear headphones for about 7 years now and used to use them on a daily basis when commuting by train and they have been faultless I don't use them so much these days because I drive to work but when I do I am still very pleased with the sound they produce, and they are so comfortable.

flimsy construction for everyday use

The last time I looked at some in the Bose shop they felt flimsy and were broken

3) i'm not convinced of their NC capabilities for non-aircraft noises

Do you really need it elsewhere?

custom made ear inserts.

Got some of these on Shure earbuds but really don't find them comfortable. Too much 'in ear noise' when you chew/move your jaw. Make my ears sore quickly if i start inserting and removing them (eg on a plane when the stewardess/partner talks to you). I took my Sennheiser HD25's on my last long flight. Great sound, light and comfortable, effectively block out background noise.
