In a hotel for a week with an iMac to play with. Apart from getting confused with the keyboard commands and no right-click, I don't really get it.

What's supposed to be blowing my mind? Apart from obvious hotel room viewing on the big crystal clear screen...

So going to be a dad soon and the wife is reading all kinds of books and has mumsnet. So obliviously singletrack=dadsnet will be my main source of information about parenting but can anyone suggest any books that are good to read from a dads perspective. Preferable something I can download onto a kindle. I know you cannot get everything from a book but it might be nice to get a heads up on a few things!

Currently trying to eat a lot healthier and cut out snacks. I have my breakfast early - 6:15 and have an active job (plus a 2 year old daughter) by 10-10:30 am i am feeling somewhat listless, i am not sure whether this is tiredness, boredom (at work), lack of caffeine, or just plain old hunger!!

So trying to change one thing at a time, the first try is lower GI food so that i do not have sugar spikes/troughs.
Usual breakfast was cereal (4-5 weetabix and milk) which i now realise is good but not great!

Last few days have been scrambled eggs with peppers, red onion, and spinach in a wholemeal pitta. Whilst i am enjoying this i am sure i will become bored of this and too many eggs ......

What do you find works for you breakfast wise, i have just read 300kcals is where you should be aiming, thats about 3 slices of dry toast ffs!!

Just venting steam here, I don't really expect anything useful to come of this.

I come from an extremely technical (IT) background. I'm still very technical despite advancing my way up the management chain to a board level report. I've done this by working seriously hard, crazy hours, lots of personal sacrifice. I have had to fight my technical background as it is very clear it is seen as a bad thing at this level. Nowadays I find the best approach is to play dumb with technical stuff despite the clear and obvious solution flashing like a red light in my head. All the other stuff that's necessary for someone of this level I'm fine with. Commercial awareness, business drivers, strategic planning, all dead easy.

I'm not a political creature though and it shows. My peers, without exception are all of a strong managerial background and are very slick at currying political favour, aligning themselves with glory work items, riding on the back of other people's success. I actually feel a bit stupid when we're together and they're talking about manipulating things, I certainly feel very isolated. I often get a desire to clam up and keep away from them all when I see how their minds work but make an effort because not doing so would be career suicide.

Then we all finish the all day meeting we're in, they get in their brand new BMW's and Jags and go home early while I get in my tatty old Honda Accord and go back to work to put another 8 hours in.

Clearly I'm doing things wrong and it's not difficult to see what I need to do but I struggle with it. It depresses me coming into work knowing I'm going to have to spend another day desperately trying to understand the next machiavelian ploy being launched at me when all I really want to do is deliver the things I'm paid to do. I'm not interested in power struggles and arse kissing, I just want to do a good job, that's how a career should progress.

So, by my very nature am I limiting my progression? I've got ambitions, but I think without changing the very person I am, I'm banging my head on a ceiling.

Senior employee experiences welcomed here, particularly from those who have been through a similar process.

(One obvious answer is since I'm asking on STW, I'm not destined for greatness - that's a criticism I accept)

And this all comes from a series of very frustrating issues at work where I've been screwed good and proper because other people are smarter at stroking up the right people than I am. I've ended up doing a lot of hard work and it's made other people look very good.

Our '30s house has a single storey side extension - the front part is a garage and there is a room which is 5m by 3m behind it which is accessed through what used to be an external door from the kitchen. It then has a door onto the garden. It is brick built with a flat roof.

Not sure when it was built but at least 20 years based on information we got when we bought the house.

There is no record of planning permission or building regs being obtained when it was built. Some sort of indemnity was purchased by the seller but I think this only covered the cost of demoloshing it if it was deemed illegal.

The current kitchen is quite small and it would be useful to be able to convert this extension room into a kitchen.

Question is what are the risks;

1) can the council still insist the extension is pulled down?
2) if I apply for retrospective planning permission can it be refused and then I'm back to q 1) again?
3) can I just make sure it meets current building regs (or do I need to)? If I apply for building regs will they be approved even if no planning permission exists.
4) what would be the impact of doing the conversion regardless when we come to sell?

thanks in advance.

Apparently, the government are proposing to tax warm food, such as Cornish pasties, at 20%

I look at most high streets across the land and see a general decline, customers driven away by the aggravation of trying to park their cars and put off by the poor choice and high prices.

I don't blame the poor retailer, who is saddled with exorbitant rents, high rates, staffing costs etc etc. They do not have the buying power to negotiate deals that one would find in the larger stores. For this reason, the small high street retailer is a threatened species, with characterless chains peddling their shoddy goods shipped in from China by the container load.

One saving grace of our dwindling local high streets is the local baker. They struggle to compete with the large supermarket chains and this sort of measure will undoubtedly be another nail in the coffin of the traditional high street.

The problem with politics in Britain is that those coming up with all bright ideas have little or no experience of what it's like to be a normal person with a normal job, trying to navigate through life..

Regardless of political persuasion, the the majority of the people at the top of the political hierarchy have enjoyed a life of privilege. They progress through the elitist education system, become government advisors and then politicians. They haven't done a normal day's work in their lives and never will! They are fundamentally unsuitable for the office they hold because they have no experience of real life. They are of course highly articulate and skilled in the business of persuading people to believe their rhetoric. Some would say these are the best people for the job, but I would beg to differ.

There is way too much deference towards middle class twits. Successive administrations and top executives have made a monumental mess of running the country. We need a much better representation for small businesses and normal hard working people..

Amazing what Cornish pasties can get you ranting about!

When I was about 15, I decided that I would train myself to be telekinetic. After an accumulative five hours or so of eye popping, gurning and getting bad headaches I gave up. That glass just wasn't going to move.

I tried to launch a Bic pen into the mesosphere by sellotaping matches, with heads wrapped tightly in foil, around the end of it.
Suffice to say, it failed to gain the necessary rate of acceleration to overcome the earth's gravitational pull...

It fell over and popped about a bit.
