Ive been using the same keyboard and mouse for the last 12 years.

We are as one.

But too many late night wine spillages and clumsy eating mean sticking keys and the mouse has a tendency to go off on it's own sometimes. It's old wireless tech.

So the conundrum is do I revive a well-loved bit of kit by prising all the keys off and giving them a soak in hot soapy water, then get to it with the cotton buds on the board...

or

Take a wild leap into the unknown with a new wireless board and mouse and just learn to use a new one - keys are never in the same place. Keypress weight will be different. Akin to making love to a woman other than one's long standing wife.....I imagine.....

I cant be the only sad sack in here who is ashamedly wedded to his keyboard?

Where I live (Salford) the SI unit of bread is the Round. As in "how many rounds of bread do you want with your soup?" just wondering if this is a local term. What do you call a slice of bread - apart from the obvious?

after a very frustrating and somewhat unbelievable experience this past winter with the local u9 football league, we finally walked away in disgust a few weeks back, my boy took to the field this morning for his first rugby game. what a difference!

the coaching, discipline, kids, parents, all really lovely and totally unlike the farce that is football.

so cheers chaps for the advice on this.

Anti-American sentiment seems to be a popular past time these days, but I've always been a big fan of the place and it's very heartfelt form of democracy. And this clip of a debate on gay marriage from the House of Representatives is just wonderful for its portrayal of the best of American democracy.

Can you honestly ever imagine such speech emanating from the House of Parliament?

I've tried Milton tablets rinsed around inside, but they take so long to dry its back again.

I've got a big birthday coming up and been asked by my Mum if I want to get a watch

She's probably going to spend £200, I could maybe put some more to that so looking at around the £200-300 price range

I've been looking at watches by Victorinox, Junkers, Tissot but I don't know anything about these brands, quality and reliability wise

Anyone got any more info or ideas?

Is it too early? How is your team shaping up? any predictions?

Scotland - underachieved at the world cup, as fairly settled pack thats pretty much a match for anyone. The killer Bees look to be getting there - anyone know how Euan Murray is doing? Short of a decent prop really but we have an eye on Cairns at Newcastle

Backs - well how brave will Robinson be? Several young players putting their hands up for a place but none of them really shone in the recent derby games. Cussitor looking in form now but Laidlaw has been playing a blinder at both 9 and 10. Weir looking reliable and strong at 10 but not hugely inspirational good temperament. Jackson and Godman just doing as they do. NO PARKS PLEASE! too soon for Leonard perhpas. Hogg and Thompson looking good as well.

Prediction? who knows. its time they won something and if they don't do well Robinson must go. Maybe a year too soon.

Team?

1. Chunk Jacobsen
2. Ross Ford
3. Euan Murray
4. Richie Gray
5. Al Kellock
6. Rob Harley
7. John Barclay
8. Kelly Brown

9. Chris Cusiter
10. Greig Laidlaw
11. Max Evans
12. Sean Lamont
13. Nick De Luca
14. Rory Lamont
15. Stuart Hogg

A fair few close calls tho on selection

England - I really like the noises coming from Lancaster and he appears to be dropping the old slow donkeys and the idiots (Danny Care) from various stories. Who knows how they will go but the Calcutta cup match will be crucial for both.

France -my pick to win

Wales - best of the home nations maybe

Ireland - midtable?

Italy - will continue to push the others hard and will win a game or two - but not Scotland please.

Unpredictable as ever - maybe more so with an influx of new players and coaches - I am looking forward to it

Is this a 'good' deal?

We have a very ordinary 1970's terraced house in a very ordinary 70's suburban estate and we'd like to extend front and rear to allow for a large porch to the front (big enough for washed, dryer, hanging coats & shoes and somewhere to park buggies and stuff. to the rear we want a full width, and probably 4M deep single room which would be playroom by day, home cinema by night. i'd like a pitched roof to the bottom of the first floor windows on both

I'm going to get a local builder round to give a broad idea of costs in order to decide if its likely to be worth doing, but what questions should i be asking? and what are the steps to go through with regards building control, planning etc? will i need to use an architect to do drawings etc

don't suppose anyone on here is a builder on the north herts/south cambs border??

It's nearly time to get a new company car. There is a very low emissions version of the Superb which appeals to my environmental and miserly sensibilities, and the boot is HUGE. It looks well screwed together, had got tones of kit and is cheap compared to a similar Audi, BMW etc (and doesn't have the image problems). So, apart from looking a bit frumpy, are there any down sides?

Can anyone recommend any dog friendly accommodation, beaches, etc and do you have any advice about taking a young dog on holiday? Thanks.

Hi

Anyone in this area used/could recommend a bathroom shop? Went into Bathstore today but the 3 people "working" in their seemed far more interested in sorting out their social lives than talking to the only 2 customers in their shop.

Myself and mrscarlos went to a family funeral last week (her uncle on mums side). Mrscarlos hasn't had any proper contact with her mother for over 20 years except for seeing her at a couple of funerals and a wedding.

The reasons in brief are poorly treated (beaten ect) as a child , stole money from her as an adult , tried to gazzump us on our 1st house purchase and generally being a nasty/vindictive person. There's other factors involved which I don't wish to go into on a public forum as I don't think it's fair for my wife to re-live some things from her past. Contact was cut in 1990.

At the funeral/wake my mother in law got to see her grandsons (6 and 1)in the flesh for the first time , we didn't make an effort to talk to her but didn't keep our kids away from her either.

Our main worry here is mrscarlos brother who is adamant that my wife should forgive her mum for past indiscretions and behaviour and act as if nothing happened as 'she's a lonely old lady' , we have no idea if her mum has said anything to her brother but get a feeling she's pressured him. Mrscarlos has no regrets about not having contact stating that 'life is easier without her in it' I feel she doesn't trust her mums intentions towards us based on her past.

After we got home from the wake mrscarlos got a text from her sister in law saying that her brother has been upset about the breakdown of the relationship for a long time and will want to talk to her about it as 'life is too short' ,Mrscarlos only worry is that when her mum's life ends her brother will be effectively on his own to arrange the funeral and thank people for coming ect.

My wife loves her brother dearly and doesn't want to loose contact with him but feels that at the time her parents split he was to young to see/understand the things that were going on , her mum has denied(to her brother) ever being anything but a caring parent to my wife and refuses to admit ever being wrong in her past actions.

My only concern here is for my wife and kids , her mother was quite cold towards me when we got together and I saw how she was when the relationship with her husbnd broke down and couldn't believe some of her actions.

Sorry for such a long post but we just want to get a bit of feedback/advice from an impartial veiwpoint as we're at a bit of a loss. We feel a bit 'damned if you do , damned if you don't'

Our CRT is well on the way out, it's time to join the present so, whilst I Google and learn all about these flat panel LCD / LED modern things I figured it sensible to ask the STW hive mind.
Thus far I have learned that - technology - there's a lot of it, and it confuses me.
Size of TV bought is generally inversely proportionate to room size
We're looking at 32" max.
We'll only be using it as a TV - we're not gamers etc.
It'll be fed signal by our Humax Freeview / Hard-drive recorder thingy = scart connection required.
John Lewis as a supplier is tempting, given the warranty...

I did my first Duathlon today. I thought that I can sort-of run and I can ride a bike, so it can't be hard, can it? However, nothing prepared me for the pain of trying to run after getting off the bike. I had obviously absent-mindedly put on my lead boots, and ended up laughing at my complete inability to move my legs.

I have been Googling around but seem to find that for some reason laptop battery purveyor websites don't instil (mainly from look/feel) confidence so wondered if anyone had a preferred supplier?

It's for a Compaq laptop, and intend to replace with a HP/Compaq branded one - bought a couple of unbranded ones in the past for other laptops and found them to be rubbish so figured the extra is worth it vs a new laptop!

Thanks in advance if anyone has any suggestions/recs.

Me and my very good lady wife are trying to plan a holiday somewhere with our 10 month old little one. Would quite like somewhere warm in October or maybe in Sept and possibly France. Not been abroad with little one before and we quite like doing stuff even if just walking so sitting on a beach package type thing not what we're after.

So do you have any recommendations? We like hills and mountains, lakes and rivers with towns for food shopping etc. I have no idea of what parts of France would fit the bill so all info appreciated, many thanks folks

Hi all I have a bit of a problem ..............

Bear with me as this is a long one !!

As you are aware we rent our house out and in December the boiler packed up and the letting agent sent in their recommended plumber to have a look at the boiler.

I didnt here anything from the letting agent so contacted the plumber direct and he told me the boiler needed replacing and if we went with him direct he wouldnt charge me for the call out to look at the broken boiler.

I also managed to knock a couple of hundred quid of his price as he said he would do it off the books and not charge me the vat....

anyway as we arent near the house any more I got my father in law to go round with the cash when it was done.

At the time (middle of december) he told my father in law that his apprentice had accidently knocked his burner over on the carpet but they had sorted it out, so my father in law said ok and paid up.

Fast forward to today and we have managed to kick our problem tenants out and so we have had a look at the house and spotted this on the landing outside the cupboard with the boiler in straight away................

on further on ivestigation it seems a big section of the carpet has been cut out and replaced from a piece out of another cupboard......

in the cupboard i found the burnt piece........

so this tool instead of phoning me and admitting it has cut a section out of the carpet and replaced it with a piece from the cupboard carpet and tried to hide it

Ive contacted the contracter today and he has basically said that as my father in law said ok and paid up then he isnt bothered and wont pay for a replacement or anything!!!!

what should i do !!

I should state that my father in law didnt tell me at the time and only remembered it toady after we said about the carpet!!
