So, below is the kit on my bike at the moment. What will give me the best return in a weight saving against money scheme:

Specialized Stumpjumper Elite
Rockshox recon solo air fork
Fox brain fade rear shock
Hope XC hubs on Mavic 317 rims
Charge spoon saddle
Ritchey comp seatpost
Superstar 80mm stem
Race face evolve bars (660mm)
Shimano SLX triple ring cranks
Shimano XT BB
Shimano XT shifters
Shimano XT rear mech
Shimano Deore front mech
Shimano XT front brake
Shimano Deore rear brake
Nobby Nic front tyre
Nobby nic rear
Shimano XT cassette
Shimano XT skewers

Current build if 13.4 Kg on my digital scales. Ideally I'd like to get it back down towards 12 kg.

Thanks for any advice.

do you gain performance or is it pointless?

Hi All,

I am looking to get out of Devon for the day on the 22nd or 23rd Feb. I have been to Cwmcarn not so long back so would like to try somewhere different?

Any recommendations? What is Verderer like? Anywhere else?

Like the title says, say up to 2hrs from Plymouth/Exeter?

Any pics or a mini review would be good.

Was musing today about whether winter riding is more "paying your dues / putting in the miles" in order to reap the benefits come the summer. But then realised that I love riding through the somewhat shitty weather of winter, and on any ride there are always some great bits to experience and remember.

So, my highlights from today's somewhat wet, grey, and chilly 6 hr ride:

- watching a red kite hunting in the field next to me
- see the snowy peaks of the mountains clear of swirling valley cloud
- the best ever mid-ride veggie cooked breakfast at the Conwy Falls cafe

So, for those of you out paying your winter riding dues - what were today's highlights for you?

Just found my rear wheel's rim is splitting so new rim and new set of spokes needed for a rebuild. Trying to work out spoke lengths. for the DT calulator here http://www.dtswiss.com/SpokesCalc/Calculator.aspx
I need to know
PCD and flange distances, and also diameter of spoke hole (why?)

hub is a Hope xc like this
http://www.hopetech.com/page.aspx?itemID=SPG165

rim I plan on is a Mavic XM319 like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=71060

spokes will be sapim race or DT comp in silver, with brass nipples, 36 of them laced 3 cross.

Okay so does anybody know the required info for the hub? Or where to find it? or how to measure it accurately enough on a hub that is still laced into a wheel?

Cheers

now, gratuitous photo of the reason for the rebuild (one of several cracks)

I know the cause - spoke tension went out of whack and way too high after some desperate re-truing following a prang a couple of years ago....I'm amazed it has lasted for another 10k miles!

Let me see what you've done, interested in component choices and colour schemes. I think mine will end up 1x9 due to existing parts I have to use. Particularly interested in medium frames (thinks that's the 17").

Does any body know of a good GPS download for Hamsterley forest. I like Hamsterley and usually do 3 laps of the black to avoid all of the fire road on the red but know that there's a lot of good track off the usual way marked route. I was wondering if anybody with local knowledge has done a gps route including all the best bits of Hamsterley that people like me don't know about and avoiding as much fire road as possible, an extended black route if you like.
I have a Garmin Edge 800.

I think it was campag that did wheels where only 1/3 spokes were on the NDS rear, anyone use them/try this?

Makes sense to me as those spokes are otherwise under such low tension (especially on the then heavily dished campag hubs).

Am thinking of trying this on my 24H stans alpha build, as the tension limits are so low the build is pretty flexy on a regular build.

Thinking about a new bike to replace the current steed and these look like great value.

Not having too much storage space at home then this will have to be my only bike so it really needs to do everything fairly well - from big mountain routes (e.g. Snowdon descents), cross country in the Peak District & the Lakes (including being okay for the climbing parts of these routes) and the odd trail centre thrown in for good measure.

Going to ride one next week but what does anyone else think? Is there a better all round bike out there I should be considering?

So I bought some Enduro seals to service my Fox Float 32's and have tried to soak some Float fluid into the foam rings that came as part of the kit.

They just don't seem at all absorbent and are a lot less spongey than the original rings.

As the original rings are still nice and lubed, I'm tempted to stick these back in, instead of the Enduro foam rings and put the Enduro rubber wiper seals on top.

Or are Enduro foam rings/seal kits designed to work differently??

It's been a while since I stuck a ride report on here, so I thought I'd make up for it by posting a ridiculous amount of boring pictures!

The plan for this weekend was to do a large loop around to the North of Ben Wyvis, starting in Contin and kipping the night in the forest on the Alladale estate. As usual, I didn't set off from home until later than I needed and so I found myself in the forestry car park swapping to Ice Spiker tyres at 1 in the afternoon on Saturday, with a fair ride to get out the way. I was finally on my way at half past, after having a nice chat with a chap called Karim (Graham to his friends ) from these forums who made me promise to do a report on here. Conditions were mixed gritty ice near my start point.

With some nice snowy bits.

The hills looked more snowy to the North.

The tarmac also bedded in my tyre studs for me.

After turning off at Black Bridge, I was finally on the good stuff.

I was probably pushing my luck for time, but stopped for butties anyway.

The coos were on guard further up Strath Vaich.

It might not be very gnarly, but nothing beats a snowy track in the mountains for me.

Passing by Loch Vaich, much of it frozen over.

The sun crept below the horizon.

At the top of the last climb I could see before riding along Gleann Mor, with only my spidey-sense to guide me.

I finally hit some decent forest and got a brew on.

Next I got my hammock and tarp up and prayed it would hold me. Maybe January isn't the best time to set it up for the first time ever - if you don't know knots, tie lots!

After one of my most comfy night's sleep ever whilst camping, it was time for more hot beverages and english muffins.

Looks a bit less wonky from this angle.

I had a quick look for some deadly wild boar before setting off, but was disappointed.

The tracks through the estate were completely clear of ice and snow, which was disappointing compared to last time I was here when it was sheet ice across the entire track. My spiky tyres would come in handy later though. Spotted a slightly nicer treehouse than mine at Glencalvie Lodge.

As I started to wind my way up the next pass, I took a look back at the impressive-looking Diebidale.

Back to the task at hand and I was up top in no time thanks to the easy gradient. I met a 78 year old gent who had left his friends to carry on up the Corbett nearby rather than risk the steep icy footpath upwards himself - with age comes wisdom!

I wrapped up warm and enjoyed the first bit of descent, with a pause to work out what the hill to the left was.

I was quickly at Lochan a Chairn, which seemed to have had a frostier night than I had.

This seemed as good a place as any to stop for lunch.

Just past the lochan, a chance chance to let rip opened up.

The Ice Spikers were loving the surface they were made for.

I flew down through the forest, skipping from side to side as the meting ice gave way and at one point suffering an off when the wheels were channelled into an icy trench which I was never getting out of! I still had to stop occasionally and enjoy my surroundings though, which were beautiful with the sun bathing me with a weak but noticeable warmth.

I could see my next target of the wind farm which I would climb over the shoulder of later.

I turned off and quickly climbed up the Kildermorie Estate road, which was nice enough to welcome cyclists.

I shot down the descent, got lost wandering between the estate buildings and eventually popped out on the banks of Loch Morie.

The track along the loch was a bit minging, wet and muddy for my liking, but once at the far end things improved a lot.

Next I hit the road at Boath, but turned off pretty much immediately to take the works track up to the wind farm.

Luckily, the gradient was easy enough and I was sensible enough not to go right up top today. This meant I could get myself over the shoulder of the hill, down into Glen Glass and on to Evanton as quick as possible with the remaining light.

The last part of the journey was an unfortunate road ride in the dark through Dingwall and Strathpeffer, before reaching the car in Contin where I had wisely left a delicious vanilla creme pastry waiting as an incentive!

I'm beyond ecstatic that my 6 weeks of radiotherapy finished 3 weeks ago after my malignant parotid tumour in the right side of my face was removed back in early November 2011. http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/fighting-cancertoday-is-tough

The side-effects were luckily very low scale - a sore throat that made me need to eat soft foods only after 5 weeks (other patients had this after week 2 and lost 15% body weight through their treatment), sore and irritable skin on the RT entry point that flaked off after 7 weeks and is now baby soft, hair loss at the back of my head where the RT exited, - and I was really lucky that they only got tricky after coming home from London where I got first class treatment at the Royal Marsden in Chelsea on a machine called Carlyle.

I'm back home in hilly Ludlow for 3 weeks now and this morning went out for my first post-treatment ride. Jeepers it was fantastic. Because the right side of my face droops after they took out the facial nerve, I get a good Lake Garda quantity of tears building up as my blink doesn't work properly. That made vision up to six feet a bit tricky, but so long as I focus on something more than 6 feet away it wasn't too bad. As the facial nerve graft from my right ankle takes over the next few months years, this should improve. I stuck to the fireroads and it was pretty straightforward.

Weight loss was about 7lbs, but as I put on 7lbs before the RT started by eating cream cakes and rich food, it's mostly evened out.

I've been using a turbo trainer 2x 15mins each day for 2 weeks now and it's made a big difference. It's helped keep me positive, upbeat, and has flushed a lot of the bad stuff out of my system and helped me absorb the food that I'm eating. At first after coming home I could only manage soup, but as I sniff the air right now I can smell potatoes dauphinoise, sausages, and peas. Nicely.

Many thanks for all your inspirational messages over the past 4 months that have helped keep me going. While going through my RT I would often come to stw.com and read about what you were all doing with your lives, and it helped me keep going when things got tricky.

If you see any Alaskan Puppy race jerseys at Mayhem this year, or one of the CRC marathons or just out and about with a big smile and a droopy right side of the face, that's me. Please say hello as I power past you up the hill.

My wife Lara and son Rowan, as well as family and friends have been incredible and to them go my warmest love and thanks for helping me through the dark days. It's all shown me how lucky I am to be alive and living in such a fantastic place, surrounded by such wonderful people with incredible spirit and love.

Life goes on.

I wear Gore Windstopper gloves but after about 20 miles (ok, I admit, they're darkside miles), my fingers are painfully cold. Any tips as I really don't want to stop my Friday night rides as they sure are helping get me quick off-road.

Only theoretical at this time. I may possibly have a site of 250 acres to build a trail, its based in the SE of England in lovely grounds.

1st question is really are 250 acres enough?

Second question is if you build a trail is it possible to make money on it? By charging a permit? On-site facilities i.e. a cafe/bike shop? Running events i.e. races..

Like I said only an idea at this stage, no more than that..

Hello,
I've got some bits & bobs to flog and not being the usual wheeler-dealer type I have no idea about the postage costs for larger items.

So, any ide how much it would cost me to post a pair of wheels or a pair of forks (separately)?

Also - any idea on good couriers to use?

Thanks!

Currently considering a gite in this area for our summer hold and I'm trying to persuade 'er who must be obeyed that we can take bikes as "cycling's bound to be easier than round here"..

Any comments on routes or ease of cycling? Wife hasn't done many miles on a bike so any easy routes would be much appreciated. Off road, or on road.

I'm keen to take a bike but won't be allowed unless hers comes too.

FInal question, Little one will be 19months old, and is quite wee. Do you think a trailer or a top tube mounted seat would be best? Any experiences of either?

Assuming 2nd road bike is sold tomorrow as planned. Budget is £900 max so that's the Boardman Team CX then (any more offers on that? It was £750 when I didn't have the money ). But I'm still taken with the Genesis Vapour that is £200 over budget but can get on interest free never never.

Nearly bought a 2nd hand CdF a couple of weeks ago but got all angsty about the weight. Not going to race it, going to ride it on the terrible roads here in the winter, and in the local woods with my youngest in the summer. Also for exploring as we've lots of small woods near us separated by stretches of road. Dull on a MTB, annoying passing on the road bike.

Put a wtd ad up to see if 2nd hand is an option, but absolutely must have disks.

The boardman makes sense, can go try one for size close by, everyone seems to rate them, but I dunno still fancy that Vapour!

Been following the lights threads with interest, but am really after a light that will double as a torch as well, but will mount to the bike's bars when needed. Anyone got experience of either specific lights or the sorts of LEDs to look for. Deal extreme prices are ideal, though obviously happy to go elsewhere is needed. Know what I'd go for if just wanting bike lights but ideally want the flexibility if possible.....

Changed cranks a little while back from truvativ SRAM to SHIMANO M770,
Not sure if that is the problem or a chainline thing (pitch pro)but snapped a chain twice so put a new chain on with a 3 month old cassette ( runs ok apart from granny and 2) WTF
So anyhow riding yesterday and the SRAM link pops open whilst climbing! WTF again!
Starting to not trust the chain set in fear of it snapping and killing myself!
Any ideas people of STW

The other half bought me a chainguide for my b'day and I stupidly thought I would need an ISCG '05 guide but have discovered that my 2011 Pitch has ISCG old tabs on the frame.

Will it work if I use the ISCG 05 bb adaptor plate i.e. will the plate/screws foul on the original iscg tabs? Would it matter if I didnt mount the plate exactly as directed i.e. slightly off centre etc.

Thought I would ask before I start dismantling everthing just to find that it doesnt fit. Also I cant send the chainguide back as they dont make it in ISCG old fitment or straight bb fitment.

Cheers

I ride an 08 Trek Top Fuel 7. It only has 90mm rear travel and it does get a hammering on the odd downhill route.

It came with Bontrager Select rims and Bontragers own hubs. I soon knackered the rear. I found the cones were forever loosening, no matter how much I tightened them. My LBS suggested I'd stretched the axle and I may as well replace the lot as the freehub was pretty far gone too.

I managed to get some cheap nearly new wheels (off this forum) from a Giant Trance. They came with a Shimano M525 rear hub. However, after just 2 months riding I have the same problem, the rear cone keeps loosening. I even got the LBS to lighten them to the max in case i was doing it wrong, but It still only lasted 2 heavy rides.

Am I wasting my time with cheap wheels? Do I keep stretching the axles or is it something else? Do I need to bite the bullet and get a better wheelset? If so what is reliable and affordable?

Unfortunately I am both a natural skinflint and currently without a job so please don't recommend brand new Hopes or something similarly expensive.

I've just been offered my old, leaky XT brakes back, so thought I'd rebuild them. Northwind, you spoke of being able to order replacement callipers and pads and using the replacement callipers for parts.

How do you replace the seal, is it a simple matter of popping the pistons out of old + new callipers and simply picking the seals out? Anything else I need to watch for?

Just noticed yesterday after a ride that my rear wheel has a slight side to side play when rocking/holding the wheel side to side....It's a pro 2 EVO hub with about 8 months old bearings in, I had this previous on some cup and cone shimano wheels which was sorted by tightening etc...is there an easy fix or do I need not worry about it? I haven't noticed it whilst riding, ie it doesn't look buckled when looking down and riding.....wheel runs smoothly, and there is no suspension play as bearings are newish in there too.

And ideas folks?

Having just replaced my cassette I have noticed that it doesn't run true. i've check the freehub for play (though the old cassette ran perfectly true anyway) and it's definitely the casette that's either bent or just out of kilter.

Took the bike for a quick run up the drive and down again and though it doesn't affect the indexing i'm worried it might get worse.
