I've got a set of Revelation XX WC's and some oil has started to leak from the top of the compression leg. Only a small amount but never the less i'm well aware it shouldn't be coming out of there. It looks as though its coming from the threads of the cmpresson unit. Is there just an o-ring to replace underneath?

Gents

To my delight we're off to the Alps for a few days in early July and have accomodation etc sorted. Does anyone have some guide recommendations please? Looking at chairlift assisted 'free riding' rather than 'death defying 40 ft gap jumps,' on the basis that we're all over 40 and generally a bit hopeless. I suspect we'll wind up with a split group of boozers v riders and there'as 8 of us.

Many thanks

I finished bolting together and twiddling my "Summer HT" last night, propped it up next to my other MTBs and realised that all three were in a rideable state for the first time in ages.

I actually have four whole bikes available (including my BMX) out of five and in a functional state, and I'm tempted to attack the Road bike next week and go from 80 to the full 100% availability...

That this state of affairs is the exception rather than the rule for me all seems a touch tragic if I'm honest, but it got me wondering how many Multiple bike owners, like myself, actually have all of their bikes working and available to use all the time? And how many Prioritize maintance activities meaning that 100% availability is never quite within reach?

*Please nobody use the following terms;
Steed, Stable, Fleet or Quiver...

Has anyone else noticed their conti sidewalls perishing in a very short space of time?

I bought these barons at the same time I built my Covert (5 months ago):

I just took them off to fit some more quicker rolling tyres before I head up to scotland next week, and the sidewalls are cracked and knackered. Not sure if they'll be fit to use again:

It doesn't show so well in the picture, but there is one 'crack' on each side that runs the entire circumference of the tyre that is visible even when you don't flex the rubber; when you pinch it, the whole surface is as shown. Both tyres are the same.

Now, these aren't the super dooper expensive black chilli ones, but I'm bloody glad these only cost me £13 each. They haven't been stored in direct sunlight, and they've hardly been ridden (probably only about 10 proper sessions, due to the crappy weather over winter). I've been a Maxxis user for ages, and I've got High Rollers, Minions and Ignitors that have been hanging around on and off of bikes for 6+ years without cracking like that. Likewise Spesh and Panaracer tyres.

Is it a one off, or are Contis not built to last? Are the black chilli tyres better (and is it worth the risk at 50 quid a pop)?

Not impressed.

Dave

Following a few recent exchanges between Dave of Cheeky trails and the Ramblers, I emailed the ramblers independently to encourage them to talk to cycling groups about the issues around shared use, arguing the similarities between the two groups and the potential for better coexistence. Something of a generic reply, but the included this experpt from their policy on shared use.

I post it as i don't think its something which has been seen before (certainly I don't think its been on other recent threads around the topic). And also as i think it reinforces the need to be good trail sharers when we encounter others on the trail, and maybe this [in my opinion] very conservative view can be challenged, and the Ramblers can be convinced of the need for a more progressive view.

* The Ramblers recognises that cyclists, like walkers, are
vulnerable road users, but notes that if cyclists and walkers are in
conflict, walkers are the more vulnerable.
* The Ramblers accepts that provision of additional facilities for
cyclists may also mean improved facilities for walkers.
* The Ramblers is concerned that shared-use-related engineering
works should be undertaken so as to minimise the effect that cycling
facilities will have on the natural beauty of the countryside, the
character of existing ways and facilities for walkers.
* The Ramblers is of the view that each proposal will need to be
judged on its merits, though considers it likely that it will oppose
many proposals for converting existing pedestrian-only facilities into
dual-use paths.

Thing which is missing for me, is any empathy for others still fighting the access fight, and a few implicit assumption within the wording. Fair enough in that they are a walking group. A shame as they just celebrated the beginning of the process by which they won their argument (kinder).

Last night it was proven beyond all doubt that the fastest bike is a 26" wheeled hardtail, the Clent Duffers (tm) did the 'no brakes challenge' at Col du Clent, present were 3 26" wheeled full sussers, a singlespeed 29er HT and a 262 geared HT, the 'no brakes challenge' involves a stationary start from a bench at the top of a slope, no pedalling allowed, freewheel down the slope and roll as far as possible, the 26" HT achieved the fastest speed on the descent and rolled the furthest therefore proving categorically the 26" HT's are the fastest bikes on the planet, I await your paltry ramblings about tyres, rider weight, bearing quality, bravery etc, I'm off to have some brekkie

Today, on the way back home from a ride, i went through a local park where there are berms/jumps etc made by local kids, i was gonna have a play on. I notice a stranger with a pick-axe destroying one of the berms, i confronted him and we had a natter.

Basically he was claiming the woods are protected, bikes aren't allowed on the footpaths (though they're not designated footpaths), the constructions were causing thinning of the trees due to land sliding, damaging wildlife ect. Then quoted particular laws that were being broken. Some inconspicuous decking used as a landing, was "fly-tipping" too. Is threatening contacting the police.

However the park rangers have given the kids permission as long as they steer clear of foot paths.

Where would i find official legal information on the status or legal use of an area of land? I'm not sure what i'm looking for, i just basically want to know the legal standing of the whole thing, so i know whether to tell said nutter to jog on or any argument against him has no leg to stand on.

So, Mrs NBT and I will be down in the south west next week for a few days. We're staying in Upton (between Bampton and Taunton) and are hoping to get three days riding between Wednesday and Sunday - maybe one day on Exmoor and two on the Quantocks, or vice versa.

so, has anyone got any route suggestions to make, please? We're not particularly fast or hardcore riders, 25 miles over a full day would be more than ample and 20 miles would probably be enough.

I don't own a GPS, might be able to borrow one, but will be purchasing some maps later. If anyone is free to join us for a ride then company would be appreciated and restorative post-ride beverages at a local hostelry will be offered by way of thanks

I have a customer who occasionally brings in one of these:
His is an older model in yellow with a rigid fork and recently I had to ride it outside the shop to identify a creak that was bothering him. With 24 inch wheels it's far too small for me but as soon as I set off I was struck by how smooth it rode and the air of 'completeness' that came from having the three speed hub, factory fitted mudguards and dynamo lights. Now I know it's probably the cycling equivalent of admitting to listening to Bucks Fizz or fancying Miranda Hart but every time I see that bike I feel myself wanting to ride it. Not far and not fast but for some unknown reason the thought of just bimbling about on it appeals to me.
Anyone else?

I think I need to get a bit more weight onto the front of my bike as my most common failure on steep uphill is for the front wheel to hit a rock, bump, root... and skip sideways and for me to put a foot down. Can I get a bit more weight up front by changing any of the set-up (saddle, bars, stem?) or is this a technique issue and I need to get off the saddle and lean forward?
Bike is a Whyte e-120 in case that makes a big difference

OK so the good old XC717 discs are an XC rim, right? The clue is in the name...

But it sounds like people here give them a good thrashing at trail centres and on the bumpy stuff too, any problems? Do they go out of true easy?

Also, I'm thinking about a tubeless conversion too but have heard discouraging things about setting up tubeless on 717s...

I'm a relatively light rider, 12st, riding a steel hardtail...
