I've got 6 bikes all of which are currently rideable.

Only time they're not is if I have to send forks or shocks away for servicing, really.

I used to always have at least one in a semi-built state but I seem to have arrived at a set of bikes that, as they are currently built, suit me so no need to change.

no, just bad batches. Low end models are usually made in India, Thailand etc rather than Japan, Germany and most likely use lower grade starting materials and worse QC.

the only cycle tyres ive had issues with were Conti XCs many years ago, it looked for all the world like theyd stopped putting rubber on the sidewalls and they frayed badly. Never used conti again.

All steeds in my fleet remain fully functional. Can't imagine having any in the stable that I can't use, what point in having a reasonable quiver if they're not useable!?

My winter road bike has been minus an STI for a couple of months, I CBA to fit it again because I now have an excuse to just ride the Madone, even when the weather's awful. That's pretty unusual though, generally they all work at any one point.

Unk stupidly wrote

Ramblers have their own publication, Walk Magazine which i get at work. In 2 yrs not seen one single complaint letter about bikes...

And summer's edition just fell into the letter box

TWO letters, one from someone who had a walk spoiled by quad bikes, 4X4s and scramble bikes and decided to shove mountain bikes in with those. Another letter asking legal advice after their walk was "caught up in a cross-country cycle race" and the "had to keep stepping aside for competitors" what are our rights etc...

The responce was the usual cyclists shall yield for anyone but made no reference to the circumstances (race), I thought in order to hold a race on a public bridleway you had to apply for some form of licence and that would override the usual policy (not saying run people over, but, you know, its a race! why not just cheer for people etc.)

Both letters very short on detail and supporting info so came off as "other people spoiled our day with their fun" but that could just have been the editor cutting them down for space...

I finished bolting together and twiddling my "Summer HT" last night, propped it up next to my other MTBs and realised that all three were in a rideable state for the first time in ages.

I actually have four whole bikes available (including my BMX) out of five and in a functional state, and I'm tempted to attack the Road bike next week and go from 80 to the full 100% availability...

That this state of affairs is the exception rather than the rule for me all seems a touch tragic if I'm honest, but it got me wondering how many Multiple bike owners, like myself, actually have all of their bikes working and available to use all the time? And how many Prioritize maintance activities meaning that 100% availability is never quite within reach?

*Please nobody use the following terms;
Steed, Stable, Fleet or Quiver...

Gents

To my delight we're off to the Alps for a few days in early July and have accomodation etc sorted. Does anyone have some guide recommendations please? Looking at chairlift assisted 'free riding' rather than 'death defying 40 ft gap jumps,' on the basis that we're all over 40 and generally a bit hopeless. I suspect we'll wind up with a split group of boozers v riders and there'as 8 of us.

Many thanks

thanks folks. I've spent a weekend in the Quantocks on Seb Roger's photo course so I've a little knowledge - Smiths Combe, Weacombe etc - but it's nice to have a guide so you know how to link things in a pleasing manner

when I was a lab monkey I used ours to clean bike bits. Chains etc come out new but its a bath, you still need a solvent to fill it with to clean the component. I used acetone or ethanol which we had in the lab for that very purpose.

If you don't like solvents/degreasers just get a biodegradeable one?

I want to like it, I really do...

...but what does it do that an Orange Five doesn't - I read that Empire slavishly copied the Five's geometry? It's more expensive than a Five, much more difficult to clean, is heavier than a Five and is a product of an untried manufacturing process.
