Long time Tenby/Saundersfoot holidayer here, there is plenty around but you need OS maps.Blackpole Mill has some good little woods by it, fun for a couple of hours , I tried the Presellis but it was a struggle but I would say its good when dry. The cliff path through the firing range is spectacular but only open at certain times.. Also some trails by Milford Haven, over bridge at Neyland I think?
As mentioned Brecfa is on the door step and excellent, also Afan is just over an hour back along the M4.
Second a visit to Narbeth, very nice place for food and a stroll.
There's a couple of guys on this forum who live down that way and are much more knowledgable than me, they might be along with some advice.
Matt.

Purbeck house hotel in swanage is quite grand, nice places to eat nearby..

Corner restaurant and chilled red are very good. I had ostriche with Yorkshire puds last time. Black swan does nice food in a nice quiet pub. Partridge and chestnut casserole is ace.

Rode up to Ogden yesterday (from Lightcliffe), frozen solid!
I usually cross the dam and then ride up alongside the golf course (nice climb, bumpy all the way up!).
You can then take the road past the sailing club etc and then pick up one of the bridleways from there. Nothing too technical although there's a very rocky climb that's great practice for a relative novice like myself. Some of the lower tracks get completely flooded (as I found out to my cost before Christmas)after a bit of rain.

i'm running a pair of vanilla 32 RLCs, 130mm travel on an old stumpy (120mm). having recently worked myself up to going off a (not very high) drop-off, i have bottomed them out a couple of times.

Is it especially bad for the forks to bottom them out in this way? it isn't too hard, but there's a definate 'clack'
With out going to harder springs and therefore compromising the general behaviour of the fork, are the only other solutions to have longer travel forks/ not to go off things of this height/ put up with a bit of bottom out?

i have a medium spring in (correct for my weight) and, with pre-load at it's slackest, i am in the recommended range of sag, but nearer to the 'xc' end (25mm ish) than the 'freeride' end (33mm) as described in the fox manual. i.e i'm running them quite stiff.
there is of course a bit of technique to be sorted out. it's when i land more heavily on the front end that they bottom out.
for the record, it's only about a 60cm drop.
cheers, jimmer

Check it has grease inside the bearing.

If all else fails, just buy a pair of BBB ones from Dotbike for £10, fill them with grease and the job is done.

I have high hopes. From what they're saying, the idea is that the centre will not cannibalise the town and businesses that serve this influx will be allowed to grow. Profits too are also to be fed back into the local community.

Why not just make it like body building and take the hell what you want with no testing.

Well body builders look far less freaky when not doping which means less cash is generated by a niche market. Cycling is just as watchable if they're not doping and attracts less of the main stream who don't want to see doped riders IMO.

I think if you were selling second hand people are more likely to accept a frame where paint had to be removed from a dropout than a hub with file marks on the axles?

It may be functionally irrelevant either way but cosmetically it probably matters?

I've got some bits & bobs to flog and not being the usual wheeler-dealer type I have no idea about the postage costs for larger items.

So, any ide how much it would cost me to post a pair of wheels or a pair of forks (separately)?

Also - any idea on good couriers to use?

Stay warm.... Two great cheats.....

Throw one of these into your sleeping bag and be toasty all night... I use a 800g £40 snugpak jungle bag for 2or3seasons and by throwing a £1 pocket warmer in there it turns it into a 3 season £200 ish bag.

Pocket warmers

And stick one of these on your head. Also great for mid ride stops when it's cold. Warm ears whilst repairing a flat on a mountainside.

You really don't need discs on a cx.

I'd tend to agree, the big advantage of discs is lack of rim-brake wear, but unless you;re doing high mileage that won't be an issue. A set of rims lasts 12 months on my CX commuter, and that's doing roughly 800 miles per year on shitty trails

going to ride it on the terrible roads here in the winter, and in the local woods with my youngest in the summer.

With a knowing nod to your bike ownership habits, perhaps you shouldd also consider resale value as it'll be up for sale again in 12 months

I do remember my old Cross Bike being terrifying off road, but that might just have been the whole experience.... but I'm am unreconstructed mountain biker and the bike will spend a lot of time in the mud so I'm going with discs even if it's only placebo!

From what we've seen in the shop, this Hope hub thing is mainly just down to tolerances. The Hope axles seem to be right on the mark and the dropouts were made very tight on tolerance. Once painted, the clearance can be lost meaning the hub axle won't fit.

Some very light cleaning up of the dropout usually sorts the issue very quickly.

As for the OP, I think he needs to contact his retailer or Cotic rather than just bad mouthing on a very well google ranked website.

The importer of another brand saw some odd warranty trends and found the items to be fakes, not supplied by them, but still finding their way in to uk circulation.

You really don't need discs on a cx. You have a tiny foot print and almost any brake will powerful enough to overload the footprint and lock up.

I think that alloy is not the right choice of material. Skinny tyres, rough surfaces... Comfy Twangy steel is where it's at.

If I only had one bike it would be a surly cross check.

+1: you have to turn it hard to get the click, It's a primitive ratchet/clutch to limit forces. Only made mine click once when I first got it. A better question would be how to repair the rebound damper when it fails which it will. Home brew fixes on net involve drilling hole in the cart and turning it into effectively an open bath damper.

Any sizing tips?

In the old days!!! The general rule was to ride a CX bike smaller than your road bike.

To quote Simon Burney, "Ideally you should choose a position 1cm lower and 1cm shorter". He goes on to say that the best way to acieve this is to use a frame smaller by those amounts so that you can use the same stem and seatpost.

I ran both my old HL 5 Spot with Van 32's and Float 32's and my current DW Link runs the new 2011 Float 140mm's and it feels great. I know they recommend the 150mm's for DW Links but the axle-to-crown length is the same and I've not found the head angle steep at all.

Regarding your forks it really depends on how old they are. If they're old Talas forks then £270 is a lot of money to pump into them as when you come to sell you will have to write that repair bill off but buying some new now will also mean that. If the forks are cosmetically mint it's a good option get them repaired but I'd be tempted personally get some new forks that come with a warranty. I do like my Floats as I found they "feel" like a coil fork but without the weight penalty. I'm selling some brand new top-of-the-range Revs in the classifieds that might be up your street though. They do have a warranty too.

some people must be a little, er, clumsy. I've raced on mine for 2 years, then they're on the 5" trail centre bike with a jumps and stuff chucked in and last summer they went to the alps and did the Megavanlance course with no issues.

They are pretty damn strong for their weight, get the SP versions for a stiffer wheel but remember to take your spare spokes just in case as SP spokes are tricky to find in shops. Crest rims don't really like sideways action, I folded one in an OTB with the wheel turned at 90deg. I wouldn't expect much to survive that tbh though.
