The Monday Morning Debrief No.1

In the first of our Monday Morning Debriefs, Dave fills us in on what the weekend held for him and a group of friends in Swaledale…

Fremington Edge: best climb in the valley.

So by coincidence the weekend after the STW Tandem weekend had visited, a bunch of us had also booked into Dales Bike Centre for a bit of ‘cross riding and a bit of mountain biking too (Thanks to Nick for doing the organising).

Van packed for a bit of adventure.

The promise of clear skies, well draining trails and a bike that needed test riding meant an easy decision for me: pack the van with mountain bikes, plenty of mountain bikes.

The centre of trails.

The great thing about Swaledale is the sheer number of options when it comes to places and routes to ride. An easy decision for Saturday was head along the river to Gunnerside then up and over the lead mine tracks in a decent enough loop that would get us out of the valley and up onto the tops for a bit of sun and hopefully a hint of warmth.

Bunkhouse post ride/pre meal snacking.

A few mishaps, mechanicals and a bit of lost and found riders meant a change of plan mid ride and the first session of the Fremington Edge/descent to Booze loop option making the most of a bit of low afternoon sunshine. The descent into Booze is one of my favourites; rocky to start then dropping into a beautifully bermed lower section that can really be railed. Perfect. We dropped back to the bunkhouse just as the sun dropped behind the surrounding hills, something which always feels like a ‘just right’ way to end a ride.

Late night route planning.

Day two sees a repeat of day one but without the mishaps. More sun, biting wind, blue skies, good climbs and better descents. At the caf√© regroup everyone’s smiling and everything is good with the world again. Two great days on the bike makes the thought of Monday and the return to work that little bit more bearable‚Ķ
