GET OUT OF MY WORKSHOP!

Men and sheds is a well known phenomenon. It’s not so much about the bikes/cars as about a man’s need for a “space” that allows him to organise his thoughts and feelings. Contributing unique mechanical skills to the household can also be seen as a measure of male worth and esteem. So if you invade his space and his skillset, his position feels threatened.

It works the other way around too, apparently.

Aye, but I bet you’re the only one that has any say in the rest of the house – lamp shades, scatter cushions, rugs, vases, paint colours (that poor Ian has to paint onto the walls). It’s a ‘Custer’s last stand’ against the erosion of the traditional patriarch role. Battle on brave Ian – a man’s workshop is his castle.

I get to play with cars and bikes in my garage and i have bikes in the kitchen
it’s a perfect compromise i think,,

actualy my girlfriend was reading this as i was typing ,, she doesnt agree, well thats what the thump on the arm told me

Oh how me and my husband laughed. A couple of years ago, he couldn’t bike at Glentress due to a knee injury. So off I went for a few days biking whilst he set to sorting the garage into a bike garage putting up shelving, bike racks etc. When I came back, like you it just didn’t seem organised in a sensible manner there were piles of stuff on the floor and yet the shelves were clear. I then spent a day putting everything tidy on the shelves. However, my husband frequently brings up that it has taken 2 yrs to find all the things I tidied and put them in their correct place in his bike garage. However when asked my bike is fixed (it could do with being washed more often).
